Book Description

November 2003
HECTOR GUIMARD: ARCHITECT, DESIGNER, 1867–1942 provides a comprehensive look at the grand architect of Parisian Art Nouveau. With more than 680 illustrations in color and black and white, the book is based on Felipe Ferré’s remarkable photographic survey of Guimard’s buildings, furniture, objects and interiors. Set in the context of George Vigne’s history and biography, Ferré’s photography triumphantly reasserts this visionary master’s place in the history of architecture.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Best known for designing the Paris Métro entrances, Hector Guimard’s most important buildings include Castel Beranger, Hotel Guimard, and the Synagogue-10 rue de Pave. Like his contemporaries Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona and Joseph Hoffmann in Vienna, Guimard’s work reflects the form, color, and light of turn-of-the-century Paris.

From the Author

"Guimard was as much designer and engineer as architect and he involved himself in every aspect of the buildings. Although he was willing to adapt to the taste of his times, he was always one step ahead of it. Nevertheless, in everything he created the wisdom of his inventive spirit, the virtuosity of his touch, and the competence with which he reconciled his art with functionality is plainly apparent."

This review is from: Hector Guimard: Architect, Designer (1867-1942) (Hardcover)
I recently wrote my undergraduate Art History thesis on Guimard's Paris Metro entrances and if not for this book, I would have barely been able to write the paper. This is by far the best book on Guimard that exists (especially in English). Vigne writes about details of Guimard's life that no other book even hinted at. He read personal letters of Guimard's and definitely did his research in order to give the reader the most in depth biography of Guimard I found. Also, Vigne used Ferre's photos to beautifully illustrate Guimard's works. I feel so lucky to have found this book not only for the sake of my thesis, but for my interest in Guimard as a whole.
