Mark's Gone, But Kandi Lives On!,
This review is from: Hed Kandi: Disco Kandi (53) (Audio CD)
Disco Kandi's latest compilation isn't put together by master Mark Doyle, but you'd never know it! In fact, I found this 2-disc wonder to be the highlight of the Disco Kandi series. The first CD is groovilicious with hot disco-themed tracks that're sure to get you on your feet. "Ghetto Funk" "Feelin Love" and "Black Sugar" are the stand-outs, with their big synths, crazy rhythms, and funky beats that are so unique to Hed Kandi. Disc two is even better, and adds a hint of spring love to the air. Definately a party mix to pull out in March or May to make you feel all twitterpated on the dance floor. There are many stand-outs, the most amazing being "2 Million Ways" "Sun Rising Up" "Take Me Away" and "Electro Shock" Like past compilations from the Disco Kandi series, the songs aren't as focused on vocals as they are beats and sythns. Whether that's your thang or not, give this a try. You'll be surprised at what a hot synth and a backup choir singing "OOooh!" can do. Honestly I think it expresses more emotion than words alone. 99% A+ album. Definately proves that Hed Kandi is not a dying company.

A disaster,
By Ben Barden (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hed Kandi: Disco Kandi (53) (Audio CD)
Well, the first unmixed Kandi compilation after Mark Doyle's departure was always going to be tough...At first glance, Disco Kandi 05.05 has lost pretty much all of the quirks that made Hed Kandi so unique. Gone is the sexy girl on a beautiful background, replaced with a barely amateur and totally lifeless graphic. I have no idea what's going on in the background, but it's boring, and the paisley pattern looks very dodgy. The sleeve notes make it look like the design changes were deliberate, but we all know they were forced on them. Not their fault, but they could at least be honest. The tracklisting on the reverse is simple, which is not necessarily bad, but there is a lot of white space. Also, the huge "53" (to indicate the 53rd CD on the label) is a worrying indication that Kandi are more interested in quantity than quality. I wouldn't say that every track is bad, but if you have any of this year's Kandi CDs you might as well not bother with this, because the only good tracks have appeared elsewhere. I've had the CD on in the background for a while and it feels like every track has been going on for far longer than it has. Nothing truly stands out.

Still going strong,
By Jake Z "holden84" (Canada) - See all my reviews

Hed Kandi is going through a lot of changes. Mark Doyle left (he compiled these collections) as well as a slew of their staff. You might notice that the cover art is different, that's because Jason Brooks also left. Anyway these are just small details. The music is what matters, and it's still good. I'm a little more partial to disc two. It's different for a DISCO KANDI compilation...there's more electronica in it. Worth checking out...the music is still good.
