Unexpectedly good,
By Tom Douglas (Marlow) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hed Phone Sex (Audio CD)
I bought this CD out of curiosity, having followed a few links on Amazon. The reviews are very mixed but I decided to take the plunge anyway. On getting the CD in my hands I had a great sense of trepidation. The sleeve notes are purile at best, and as noted in other reviews were quite possibly written by a 12 year old with hormones running amok. However, its best not to judge a book by its cover and indeed this double CD is actually rather good. There are some very sexy basslines (though hardly a sexual experience), and the tracks are mixed up enough to be interesting and similar enough to carry a general theme. In terms of providing guidance as to whether or not this CD is for you... tricky! The reviews reveal that you will either like this CD is detest it with great passion. If it helps, this CD claims to be a mixture of jazz and hip-hop, but in reality has more drum and bass than anything. Its kinda a jazzy version of LTJ Bukem. Gentle on the ears and relaxing. If it had a different title and a better CD case, this album would earn less derision.

One of the best of its kind,
By A Customer

This is one of my favorite CD's. The music is fairly well described in the other reviews, so I won't add to that, but I'm surprised that 2 of the 3 previous reviews pan it. Usually even mediocre albums get nothing but rave reviews, and if there is even a little criticism it's usually s bad sign, but I have over 20 CD's of this style and to my taste only the benchmark "K & D Sessions" and Nightmare on Wax's "Carboot Soul" can compete. It's cool, relaxing, sexy music. I most frequently listen to it while stuck in rush hour traffic to keep from pulling my hair out and almost regret pulling into the driveway. I've played the CD for multiple friends and they all like it. Those who are into the style agree that it is one of the best of the genre.

I've been looking for something between Fila Brazillia and Portishead and some other thing that I couldn't define until I heard it. This is it. This is two full hours of hyper-sexualized, highly entertaining, hypnotic groove. It is mesmerizing, but doesn't take itself too seriously. One of the best albums I own... and I've had it for less than 24 hours.

An incredible album,

The slow, sexy background music kind of reminds me of some of Prince's best slow music from a while back, and the samples range from catchy to hilarious ("I go down to the basement, where nude and lingerie-clad models are holding a poseathon!").This is great music to really listen to, great background music, and (in case the Amazon review didn't make this clear) perfect music to have sex to.

a little gem...this album is groovy from begining to end. expect to be chilled, in a polyrhythmic soundscape. it's minimal, but finely crafted, with choice samples and solid beats. it's excellent for nookie, smoking and reading. dont listen to while driving...its a bit hypnotic.

Sleaze-bient,

Here's the Big Beat with a sexy twist - the samples have been taken from a variety of sexually-oriented (though never explicit, exactly) sources. What we get is a smart, funny jibe at the commercializtion of sex. Some tracks are just plain hysterical, with sampled voices pining for "four big rednecks;" others are more musical and trippy, like "Dubble." This is a great collection of beaty ambient pieces, with a universal theme. Try it.

This album can totally drift through the background as an afterthought or totally grab you by the color and engague you. It's really up to you how you want to hear it. That's what's so great about it... It's incredibly versatile. Hed Phone Sex is the epitomy of downtempo: Dark, dirty, and slow. I imagine not alot of people haven't had a chance to hear this record, so you have to check it out if you haven't. If you're open to this kind of stuff, it's a rewarding listen.

Sexy IDM At It's Finest,

This double cd set is well worth the money if you like driving rhythms and aren't offended by clips of sexual commentary by 50's sitcom-sounding chicks. It's quite fascinating, really...too hard to explain and must be experienced! If you love Spinner.com's IDM channel, this is a gold mine! Order it today.

Funki Porcini - Hed Phone Sex,
This review is from: Hed Phone Sex (Audio CD)
One of the seminal albums that kicked off the "sleazy listening" genre, Funki Porcini's _Hed Phone Sex_, is a sensuous piece of downtempo that helped put Ninja Tune on the map. The beats are slow and sexy, the samples are aimed to tickle and please, the jazz smoky and slinky. You can tell that Funki Porcini was having fun making this album, and his sense of dirty humor shines through, right from the opening interlude of "A Word of Vice." "Dubble" delivers the dub rhythm, as promised, which carries into "King Ashabanapal Pt 1" and finally treads lightly into drum 'n' bass. Funki knows how to mix things up too: while "The Deep" certainly dwells in that area for a while, halfway through, he throws in some horn stabs to break up the sounds. If there's anything more groovy and ridiculous than "Poseathon," I have yet to hear it. "Wicked, Cruel Nasty and Bad" has a certain wicked glint in its eye. But the album can do dreamy just as well: "The Softest Thing in the World (Motorway Accident)" could have almost been a Irresistable Force track if not for the jazz piano chords, and "Long Road" takes the album out on a blissful drift. Smooth as silk.

Funki Porcini's 'Hed Phone Sex' is easliy one of the best down-tempo/abstract hip-hop albums I have ever heard. It mixes elements of jazz, dub, breakbeat, even a little jungle as it seduces the listener. I put this up there with Luke Vibert, Bonobo, and Quantic. Give it a test.
