Excellent Survey of Techniques,
By Cliff The Engineer (Fremont, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: John Hedgecoe's Complete Guide to Photography, Revised and Updated (Paperback)
Each chapter is just 2 pages, with just one concept to grab. Great to have bite-size concepts, like form vs. shape, taking pictures of children, bright colors, etc.

I bought this out of print book with a little trepidation to accompany a PSA photo course that I'm taking. Afraid that it would be outdated I was surprised to find that the lessons and exercises are for the most part timeless. There is some repetition and splitting hairs in that some of the chapters are only slightly different than others but the overall experience has been very positive.

I did get the Hedgecoe Complete Guide to Photography, but it was a softcover copy, not the hard cover that I ordered.

I haven't finished this book yet, as it's a little dry for my reading style preference, but it definitely contains the basics any photographer needs to know.

This book was a requirement for an online photography course that I am currently enrolled. I have scanned the book and thoroughly read Chapter One. It is comprehensive, easy to understand, and full of good information. The information is a little outdated from a technology perspective in that it is still referring to film cameras instead of digital, but the principals are still the same. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to take better pictures. My only criticsm is related to the condition of the book. I purchased a "new book". The book that I received had a worn, yellowed dust jacket. It looks like it has been sitting on the shelf for years. I had to look at it closely to verify that it was, in fact, "new" and to go back to my original order to verify that I had ordered a new and not a used book.

Excellent Photography Guide,

This review is from: John Hedgecoe's Complete Guide to Photography, Revised and Updated (Paperback)
An excellent guide for beginners and photographers wanting to improve their skills. The book focuses on project work with set assignments. This revised version (1994), now out of print, updates sections on digital photography.

Nicely illustrated,

This review is from: John Hedgecoe's Complete Guide to Photography (Paperback)
Hedgecoe does a nice job of using a minimum of text joined to nicely done photographic images to illustrate his points. The book is very complete and very easy to use for learning and applying useful photo techniques. I would have liked a bit more detail on painting the interiors of large buildings with light. Still, what is presented together with a little experimentation is enough to get the job done. Even though digital images have all but replaced images taken on film, there is still much useful information in this book on using and manipulating light for the desired effect. It is no wonder Hedgecoe's books have been translated into other languages and are popular in non-English speaking countries.

I could have purchased this book for $3.00 less @ a local camera store! I didn't know that I was purchasing the book from an individual seller. The seller was very polite and answered my E-mail properly. She also shipped FedEx the book very nicely and said it was a gift that never been used.
