Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-3-Serviceable introductions to estimable inventors. Gaines provides a paragraph or two on the subjects' early lives, then focuses on their achievement(s). None of the titles goes into any great detail. Double-page spreads include a full-page photo (generally black and white) opposite a paragraph or two of large-print text. While there are a number of titles on the scientific work of both Bell and Edison, Lamarr, known to the world as a movie star of the 1930s and '40s, is less well-known as an inventor. She and George Antheil, who wrote player piano music, received a patent for their "Secret Communication System," better known as channel hopping. It is used to keep signals a secret and although originally intended for torpedoes, it is now employed by satellites and the Internet. These works are appropriate for both invention and basic biography assignments where needed.
