Format: MP3 Music
Wicked Knee is a brass band composed of Billy Martin (drums), Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Marcus Rojas (tuba), and Steven Bernstein (trumpet). It's meaningful to describe this music as rooted in the New Orleans tradition. Think of groups like the Dirty Dozen and Rebirth brass bands. While this is a good descriptor to distinguish the sound from something like straight Jazz, the guys put their stamp on the musical paradigm. Compared to the band's initial EP, "Heels Over Head" offers a new batch of songs and a more polished presentation. 'Ghumba Zumba' is a fun opener. The catchy 'Button to Button' is made for dancing. 'Rendezvous' is a reflective dirge. Shelley Hirsch lends her vocal talents to '99%.' Equally demented and sultry, she primarily does spoken word. 'Sugarfoot Stomp' would fit right in on Frenchman Street; it makes for a smokin' highlight. 'Chaman's Interlude' and 'Noctiluca' are avant-atmospheric.

As a fan of both New York's downtown Jazz scene and New Orleans brass music, "Heels Over Head" should have been an easy home run. I really wanted to love this album and I'm not entirely sure why it fell short for me. While being great Jazz musicians, it may be a bit of a stretch for Downtown musicians to play brass music that can approximate what's coming out of the Crescent City nowadays. That said, this band does sound great live. With that in mind, there's a reason NOLA brass bands tend to play lots of gigs and release few studio albums. Beyond the performance, the melodies and arrangements just aren't that interesting. This would be a different story if every song were as good as 'Button to Button' and 'Sugarfoot Stomp.
