Book Description

November 2, 1999 0534575978 978-0534575977 1
This brief text assists students in understanding Heidegger's philosophy and thinking so that they can more fully engage in useful, intelligent class dialogue and improve their understanding of course content. Part of the "Wadsworth Notes Series," (which will eventually consist of approximately 100 titles, each focusing on a single "thinker" from ancient times to the present), ON HEIDEGGER is written by a philosopher deeply versed in the philosophy of this key thinker. Like other books in the series, this concise book offers sufficient insight into the thinking of a notable philosopher better enabling students to engage in the reading and to discuss the material in class and on paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars To unhide Heidegger, that is, to unconceal and thus reveal the truth...., June 27, 2010

This review is from: On Heidegger (Wadsworth Philosophers Series) (Paperback)
John V. Karavitis Another excellent entry in the Wadsworth Philosophers Series, Ms. Patricia Altenbernd Johnson knows her stuff and makes it accessible to the layman. Heidegger is considered to be one of the most important philosophers of the 20th century. From Chapter 1: "Some judge him to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, twentieth-century philosopher." Wow. That alone should make one want to read this book. We get a brief sketch of Heidegger's life story (but nothing more than a mention of his mistress, Hannah Arendt), and then it's hip-deep in "Being and Time". John V. Karavitis Heidegger is a typical German continental philosopher. He's a continental philosopher in that, like almost all European philosphers, he focuses on a person's place in the social and political spheres. He's a German philosopher in that, even in the English translations of his works, he's almost unintelligible. Are you "up" on modern philosophy? Yes? Then you must "understand" Heidgger, yes? John V. Karavitis Heidegger's work in Being and Time echoes Hegel and Nietzsche, and his "The Origin of the Work of Art" begins with an echo of Aristotle in that the "thing" has matter and form. Thus, Heidegger is a true continental philosopher in that he "continues the conversation" that preceded him in philosophy. Unfortunately, IMHO, he, at best, comes off as contrived and strained, in addition to being subject to creating his philosophy "on the fly", as in an extemporaneous stream of consciousness soliloquy. Again, IMHO, a philosopher who has nothing much to say, but finds a way to say it and make his listeners (self-absorbed pseudo-intellectual Euro-trash) enthralled. Want to learn all about Heidegger? This entry in the Wadsworth Philosophers Series is THE BOOK to get a hold of. Read it and learn. John Karavitis.
