5.0 out of 5 stars a modern alt-folk masterpiece, October 21, 2002
This review is from: Heidi Berry (Audio CD)
How Beth Orton and Kathryn Williams can receive such critical acclaim when Heidi Berry - superior to both - goes largely unrecognised, continues to baffle me. Some people seem to have a problem with her richly tremulous (but beatifully controlled) vocals, but it's their loss. This 1993 album is arguably her best. From the rousingly melancholy (if that's not some sort of contradiction!) opener Mercury, via the subtle folk-pop brilliance of The Moon And The Sun and Distant Thunder, and the beautifully understated For The Rose, the standard barely dips below excellent. Maybe the brief foray into ethereal 4AD territory on Ariel is an uncharacteristically weak moment, but it makes the final fatalistic (but also strangely uplifting) Dawn, which follows, all the more effective. Add some brilliant arrangements and shimmering production and you have a modern alt-folk masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Masterpiece, March 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Heidi Berry (Audio CD)
I discovered Heidi many years ago on NPR and actually bought this cd in a close out box for a dollar! One of the greatest finds of my life! Lyrics - out of this world and even Caroline Lavelle plays some cello on this one. Serious, sophisticated folk with accompaniments galore!

5.0 out of 5 stars Berry's Best Work, October 17, 2002

This review is from: Heidi Berry (Audio CD)
This is the first Heidi Berry album I got, and I think it is her best. It is the most mature and refined, and has the best production quality of all her albums, plus her songs and the arrangements (especially the cello) are the most beautiful on this album.

I find her sound unique and hard to compare to other artists. It's like slow acoustic folk with bits of traditional celtic songs mixed in. Either this album or her previous one, "Love," would make a good introduction to her work.
