Book Description

December 27, 2011 The Heir of Kilronan
A man too dangerous to live . . .

After seven years outrunning enemies, friends, and his own soulcrushing memories, Brendan Douglas is risking everything on a desperate mission. He has vowed to thwart the evil mage Máelodor’s plans to unlock the past and reshape the future; unfortunately, the precious treasure that is his key to success lies with a woman Brendan jilted seven years before.

A woman determined to find a life of her own . . .

When her golden-eyed childhood hero abandoned her at the altar—disappearing in a storm of magic and mayhem, destruction, betrayal, and disaster—Elisabeth Fitzgerald struggled to put away her humiliation and loss. Finally, she has found a new fiancé and a comfortable future. Then, the one man she thought she would never see again appears—among her wedding guests. Brendan Douglas has returned.

An inescapable destiny . . .

It’s not just that Elisabeth is promised to another; Brendan knows he is drawing her into terrible danger. But he cannot resist the bewitching, brave, wholly unexpected woman his youthful nemesis has become. He promised to sacrifice everything, but is he willing to sacrifice Elisabeth?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Elisabeth Fitzgerald thought Brendan Douglas was dead, but instead it seems he has decided to return from the grave to ruin another wedding for her. Seven years ago, Brendan jilted Elisabeth at the altar. When his father was found murdered shortly thereafter, everyone not only assumed Brendan had something to do with the mysterious murder but also had been killed himself. Now a very-much-alive Brendan is back in Dun Eyre just as Elisabeth is about to marry Gordon Shaw. Brendan has no intention of romantically reclaiming Elisabeth; he just needs the Sh’vad Tual, the magical gemstone embedded in a necklace he gave to her. Without the gemstone, Brendan has no hope of stopping a power-mad mage bent on ruling the world by resurrecting King Arthur. But it won’t be as easy as he hoped to separate the necklace from Elisabeth. In the thrilling conclusion to her Heirs of Kilronan trilogy (after Earl of Darkness, 2010, and Lord of Shadows, 2011), Rickloff perfectly fuses a refreshingly inventive, paranormal-steeped plot with an impeccably crafted Regency setting, and the result is a smart, sexy, and sublimely satisfying romance. --John Charles

More About the Author

ALIX RICKLOFF grew up with a family tree that included a knight who fought during the Wars of the Roses (his brass rubbing hangs in her dining room), and a soldier who sided with Charles I during the English Civil War (hence the family's hasty emigration to America). With ancestors like that, who wouldn't be inspired?

Alix turned this fascination with British history along with her love of storytelling to good use. She began writing, releasing her first historical-paranormal in 2007. Her books have been described as "sexy and intense", "exciting and spellbinding" and "a universe you won't ever wish to leave".

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting finish to the Heirs of Kilronan trilogy January 24, 2012
By Elf2060
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"Heir of Danger" by Alix Rickloff is the final book in the trilogy that includes "Earl of Darkness" and "Lord of Shadows". The evil mage Maleodor has obtained most of the keys to allow his to break the enchantments that protect the final resting place of King Arthur but he still needs the stone called the Sh'vad Tual. Brendan Douglas has been running for seven years to escape the repercussions for his ill-advised actions. Elisabeth Fitzgerald has finally gotten over being jilted by Brendan and is about to marry a man who seems to be much more suitable than the man whom everyone assumes is dead. Brendan tries to convince himself that he is just back to retrieve the treasured relic that he left in Elisabeth's unsuspecting possession but he reluctantly realizes that he can't leave her to face the repercussions of having had guardianship of the very relic that Maleodor needs to complete his arcane ritual in his attempt to institute rule by `Others' over the entire world. Brendan is being sought by the Amhas-draoi in reparation for the crimes perpetrated by the `Nine' which he initially instigated. Unfortunately, Brendan is unwilling to atone with his life if it means that his brother, Lord Kilronan, will still be at risk. Brendan unwillingly becomes even more ensnared in the attraction that Elisabeth has felt for him as he races to deliver the stone to Scathach without being captured and tortured again by Maleodor or his henchmen or killed by the rest of the Amhas-draoi.

An exciting finish to the series, Brendan must find a way to atone for his past sins while protecting the innocent that he has inadvertently dragged into the complicated and dangerous situation that his life has become. It would have been nice to see more of the characters from the first two books in the series and it is still a bit confusing with the introduction of the Imnada as well as the odd actions of Jack and Helen and the harper, but there are wonderfully dramatic scenes leavened with flashes of humor as well as a very satisfying climactic scene and epilogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific Regency romantic fantasy December 27, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Following the murder of his father seven years ago, Brendan Douglas fled Ireland and remained on the run. He left behind Elizabeth Fitzgerald at the altar to flee assassins while unable to leave behind the horror that haunts his every moment.

Finally, Brendan knows he ran out of time as he must prevent Maelodor the malevolent mage from raising King Arthur from the grave and destroying the world. To do so means retrieving the stone he left behind with his beloved Elizabeth who Brendan believes loathes him; she insists she does detest the dis-honorable one. He arrives in Dun Eyre, Ireland as his Lissie is set to marry Gordon Shaw. To keep her safe, Brendan abducts Lissie though the risk is that she will be in the midst of the fight, but he also needs her when he challenges the evil one.

The third Heirs of Kilronan Regency romantic fantasy (see the Earl of Darkness and the Lord of Shadows) is a terrific tale in which readers will believe they have been transported to nineteneth century Ireland where mortals and Fey reside. The lead couple is a wonderful second chance at love tale; that is if they survive. Fans will appreciate the dark, fervid and deadly Rickloff mythos as the latest Douglas sibling and soul mate battle against impossible odds.

The future is not set, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves - Irish proverb.

Alix Rickloff returns to Regency Ireland for the third book in her HEIRS OF KILRONAN trilogy with HEIR OF DANGER. It is not just a historical romance but a paranormal adventure with Fey magic and Arthurian legends. Brendan left home - and his beloved Elizabeth - for his safety. He returns three days before Elizabeth's wedding for her safety as she possesses a stone that the evil Máelodor seeks to unleash demons.

Rickloff delivers a fast paced, action packed, magic laced story that entranced me as much as my personal pilgrimage to Tintagel - King Arthur's birthplace in Cornwall. Her vivid descriptions made Regency Ireland - and its mystical lore - very real to me. I waited in suspense at the house party for Brendan to approach Elizabeth. I cringed at the malevolence pouring from Máelodor. My heart pounded as the former lovers run for their lives while falling in love again.

I read HEIR OF DANGER as a standalone book. I am now intrigued to read the first two in the series. I recommend HEIR OF DANGER to fans of historical romance who are looking for something "out of the ballroom."
