Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This byzantine conclusion to Coulter's Bride trilogy ( The Sherbrooke Bride ; The Hellion Bride ), set in 1807 Scotland and loaded with sex, splinters under the burden of its foolish and two-dimensional characters. Colin Kinross, seventh earl of Ashburnham, faces daunting problems: his castle is decaying, villainous clansmen are usurping his land and unmanageable debts keep mounting. But Joan "Sinjin" Sherbrooke, at 19 one of England's wealthiest women, has fallen in love with him and proposes a financially rewarding marriage. In order to escape Sinjin's two protective brothers, they elope to Colin's Scottish castle. There Colin presents Joan with two surly stepchildren and a pair of malicious sisters-in-law--it seems he has kept a previous marriage secret. Complications abound. An anonymous letter writer accuses Colin of throwing his first wife off a cliff--are murderous kinsmen seeking vengeance? Even ghosts are pressed to intervene at crucial moments as th e disjointed plot veers out of control.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great characters and situations, but empty story, September 26, 2003
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love Sinjun and I really liked Colin, and his children and sister-in-law were good characters as well. However, the story seems to have fallen apart from the basic outline of the plot to its execution. Based on the blurb, the book had all the makings of a funny and charming novel, but there were so many holes in the plot and characterization that it ruined my experience with The Heiress Bride. First, I think the author might have some sort of predilection for forced sex, because not only did Colin force Sinjin into painful, unpleasant sex, but he was forced her into three times in a row! It's almost as though most of her male characters only know how to control themselves with their mistresses, but when it comes to wives it's all about trying to master them and bend their will. Secondly, the appearance of a ghost in Colin's castle was a little unnecessary, but I can understand its presence since the rest of the Sherbrooke series features the "Virgin Bride." Lastly, though I enjoyed The Heiress Bride, I can only see myself reading it just this once. IMO, Coulter's only consistent Regency Historical trilogy was the Legacy Trilogy--the plots were amazing, the characters great, and the mysteries were engrossing. So far, only the aforementioned Legacy series, the Medieval and Viking series', and Coulter's stand-alone Regencies sit on my keeper shelf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, January 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked this book up on a whim and decided to give it a try. After a rather tedious beginning, I found myself getting into the story of a young woman infatuated with a handsome earl in need of money. I surprised myself at emotional I became over a few dramatic scenes. Definitely worth recommending, and I'll read it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Book!, December 5, 1999
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have owned a copy of this book for so many years, and re-read it so many times that it is almost falling apart. I love it! Sinjun falls in love at first sight and proceeds to show the man of her dreams that what he thinks he wants in a wife is not what he really needs. She overcomes all challenges and continually rises above them.
