Great characters and situations, but empty story,
By
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I love Sinjun and I really liked Colin, and his children and sister-in-law were good characters as well. However, the story seems to have fallen apart from the basic outline of the plot to its execution. Based on the blurb, the book had all the makings of a funny and charming novel, but there were so many holes in the plot and characterization that it ruined my experience with The Heiress Bride. First, I think the author might have some sort of predilection for forced sex, because not only did Colin force Sinjin into painful, unpleasant sex, but he was forced her into three times in a row! It's almost as though most of her male characters only know how to control themselves with their mistresses, but when it comes to wives it's all about trying to master them and bend their will. Secondly, the appearance of a ghost in Colin's castle was a little unnecessary, but I can understand its presence since the rest of the Sherbrooke series features the "Virgin Bride." Lastly, though I enjoyed The Heiress Bride, I can only see myself reading it just this once. IMO, Coulter's only consistent Regency Historical trilogy was the Legacy Trilogy--the plots were amazing, the characters great, and the mysteries were engrossing. So far, only the aforementioned Legacy series, the Medieval and Viking series', and Coulter's stand-alone Regencies sit on my keeper shelf.

I picked this book up on a whim and decided to give it a try. After a rather tedious beginning, I found myself getting into the story of a young woman infatuated with a handsome earl in need of money. I surprised myself at emotional I became over a few dramatic scenes. Definitely worth recommending, and I'll read it again.

This is a Great Book!,
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
I have owned a copy of this book for so many years, and re-read it so many times that it is almost falling apart. I love it! Sinjun falls in love at first sight and proceeds to show the man of her dreams that what he thinks he wants in a wife is not what he really needs. She overcomes all challenges and continually rises above them.

The Heiress Bride,
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
Coulter rounded out the Bride trilogy in a very good way. If you read the books in order, you have watched Sinjun grow. Now, in The Heiress Bride, she is all grown up and has fallen in love. Take a ride with Coulter on the rollercoaster of dispair and delight that she has created for Sinjun. The bad, along with the good, makes this book a delightful, although emotionally draining, read that I will enjoy for many years to come.

Sinjun Abused,

There was enough redemption and entertainment in the first 2 books to have me reading the third, but what a way for Sinjun to go! I liked Sinjun, I liked Colin, the Scottish adventure and running away from the overprotective brothers is great... So why does our Strong and Manly hero have to ruin it all by subjugating the eager and talented Sinjun to HORRIBLE sex. And later in the book when Sinjun decides to "let" her husband hurt her, it's DISGUSTING. Having a man force sex on a woman is NOT romantic! Rewrite the book to take out the rape and I would love it.

Sinjun and Colin...,
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
First-let's get the issue of the "forced sex" part on the wedding night-which was dissappointing, disgusting and completely devaluing an otherwise great book-out of the way.
Besides that almost fatal flaw-The Heiress Bride is a very good to great book! I love the characters in these novels-the Sherbrookes are fun, but flawed-wonderfully weird, and I was happy to see Sinjun and her brothers back-it's like seeing old friends again. I like the way Coulter writes this family, the time period, and the interaction between characters-and I for one love the "ghostly" aspects in each book-they're fun. They do live in old manors-you'd think they would have have ghosts? The love and or sex scenes could have been written better. I think most fans problems with the book is they love Sinjun from the previous novels-and wanted her to be cherished and appreciated and not seemingly ridden roughshod over by her husband and his family. Happily, Colin does learn the error of his ways and comes to truly appreciate the wonderfully flambouyant Sinjun:) All in all-if you're a Coulter fan and have read the previous two Sherbrook books-you cannot miss out on Sinjun's story. 4 stars!

An Overall Pleasing Novel,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
Catherine Coulter's The Heiress Bride is a masterpiece on my bookshelf. The general flow of the novel is fast paced though it does slow down enough in spots for readers to catch their breath and their bearings. From the begining of the series you have watched Sinjun grow into her self, while in this hilarious novel, not only is she getting to know herself, but Colin Kincross as well.Colin Krincross is the an impoverished Scottish earl, who needs an heiress to increase the estates coffers. Throughout this delightful tale they battle for the right to be the "man" of the family. Sinjun with her no-nonsense ways; Colin with his male pride, battle it out to create a delightful romance and slight mystery. To find out who wears the britches in the family, read the novel. Though, be prepared to laugh, and be a little frustrated with Colin (maybe Douglas and Ryder, too). Enjoy one of Catherine Coulter's finest works!

Having read Coulters first two Bride novels, and fell in love with the only Sherbrooke girl child during those, I was excited to see that she got her own book. However, I was slightly disappointed that our heroine was not as outrageous as she came across in the previous stories. She is all grown up, so that accounts for some of it, but she got tamed a little too much by Ms. Coulter. The story centers around Joan "Sinjun" Sherbrooke and Colin Kinross, who is a penniless Scottish nobleman. They meet, and marry--on one side it is a marriage of convenience, on the other it is with the hope that it will turn out like her brothers' happy, love/lust-filled marriages (guess whose side is whose). Wealthy Sinjun gets to Colin's home in Scotland, and all hell breaks loose. Throw in slightly neglected children, a pair of ghosts, a crazy aunt, and a dead wife, and you have a historical soap opera. Only Coulter could possibly hold the readers' attention throughout all this, but with Sinjun's wit and Colin's annoying manliness, she manages to scrape together an entertaining story. Definitely worth the read, especially if you have already started the series.

This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (MP3 CD)
In the Heiress Bride Coulter, gives the reader a chance to follow the continuing saga of the Sherbrooke family through the lone female of her generation. The heiress, Sinjin, is quite a bit younger than her three brothers -- almost a contemporary of her sisters-in-law, which makes their overprotectiveness understandable (sort of). The story begins as Sinjin overhears a conversation and annnounces to one of the conversants, Colin Kinross, a Scottish earl, that she is just what he is looking for in a wife. Although this is enough to establish Sinjin's unconventional nature, I found that reading about her exploits in her brothers' stories enriched my appreciation of her spirit.
Coulter's Sherbrooke series translate very well in the audio book format. The talented narrator is able to project the different characters through tonal qualities, inflection and regional speech patterns. The MP3 format is a pleasure for those of us who listen to audio books to make lengthy workout sessions tolerable.

A Little history Lesson,
By
This review is from: The Heiress Bride (Bride Series) (Mass Market Paperback)
Hi there, I enjoy all of Ms. Coulter's books, Especially the bride series, I follow them will b/c I love to read about history and for the most part concerning relationships between the man and woman in the 1800's that's how it was. The world was not just a overpouring with racism but sexism as well. During this victorian age men thought of themselves as superior and dominant over the woman. Back then it was the man that guided the woman through sexual intercourse, there was no sex ed! The night you got married was when you were educated. You can just imagine if men can mess up simple things like reading and writing, that they can mess up a woman's first time. The point is they handled it the best way they know how which is basically like a rape. But you can't fault Ms. Coulter for telling it like it is. That's how it was back then I mean it is an adult romance novel if you wanted something sweet and innocent you should have bought a disney movie. Yes these scenes may not be pretty or how we like them but that's a slice of life and if you don't like it bite something else! Ms. Coulter keep doin what you're doin some one is always going to have something they don't like. But let me tell you something I bet you a lot more wedding nights happened exactly how she described them back then, then just a sweet caring experience. Most men believed, Like Douglas said in the 'Sherbrooke Bride" that women weren't meant to recieve pleasure and it is a man's job to give it to them. That's not something she made up they really did believe that. So don't be mad at Ms. Coulter be mad at history.
