About the Author

Amanda Mahan's secret mission began in high school when she won a writing competition with an essay about a skydiving trip. The fact that she never actually went skydiving suggested a career in fiction. After graduation, she spent several years writing comedic online games and worked on two NBC sitcoms. She was also the writer and creator of the People's Choice award-winning "Green Mommy" blog.
Amanda is an expert in applying lip balm, a complete failure at doing her own hair, and specializes in baking addictive red velvet cupcakes. She lives in the Bay Area with her husband, two munchkins, and entirely too much glitter.

Heiress, P.I. -- think Veronica Mars meets Gossip Girl -- is her first novel.

Q&A With the Author

Q: What gave you the idea for Heiress, P.I.?

Amanda: A few years ago I read a story about Paris Hilton and how she gave the police some information that helped them solve a crime. It got me thinking, what if her whole persona of ditzy celebutante was just an act? Wouldn't it be funny if she were secretly investigating cases like Veronica Mars, but using her celebrity identity as a cover? That seed was the inspiration for the book.

Q: Why write a Young Adult mystery?

Amanda: I have always (not so secretly) wanted to be a private investigator. There is something so consuming about unlocking a mystery and figuring out why people do the things they do. I also think some of the freshest, most exciting novels in the last few years have been Young Adult. I actually get a lot of my reading recommendations from my friends' daughters!

Q; What's next?

Amanda: I have an adult mystery called Unclad coming out next year, which takes place in a Los Angeles spa. In case it's not obvious, I am an avid celebrity watcher. I admit it freely: I love trashy gossip. Living in LA for several years made me want to deconstruct certain elements of the Hollywood life and the wild people I met and befriended there.

Heiress, P.I. by Amanda Mahan - Lucy Hansen will one day be an heiress with a fabulous fortune amassed by her father's famous hotel family. Lucy has been deeply involved in ecology and save-the-planet projects, but has kept a low profile in public. Suddenly she is thrust into the bright lights and flash bulbs like Britney, Lindsay and Paris Hilton. She can't tell anyone she's trying to save her family's reputation by getting involved with the elite bad-boy crowd. Stalked by paparazzi and aided by her childhood boyfriend, Holden, an intern at a detective agency, Lucy stumbles through an investigation, putting herself in jeopardy while earning a high-profile bad girl reputation. Will she be able to help her father or get herself raped or killed in the process? Art theft, designer clothes, wild parties and frenemies who can't be trusted propel this story forward in the time of social media, instant fame and tracking spyware. Amanda Mahan bursts onto the Y.A. author stage with a great fast-paced story with witty, believable and likeable characters. This has the makings of an interesting series. Minimal sex and violence. Five stars. ***** Sandy Penny, Founder of Sweet Mystery Books.

I couldn't put this book down. It grabbed me right from the beginning and I skipped lunch at work and ignored my husband and children until I finished! Tons of fun!!!

My first impression was that this book was going to be fun but all fluff. But deeper into the story I realized this “alternate universe” view is more than simply entertaining. Lucy Hansen seems to be a frivolous and unlucky celebutante on the surface but there are actually clever reasons for all of her actions. She has a secret purpose. I will never read the tabloids in the same way again! My only tiny complaint is that technically Lucy wasn't hired as a PI. Her friend worked for a PI, and she went undercover to help her friend, so really she'd be an asset. Not that big a deal though.

Who knew a heroine could be both fabulously wealthy and well-dressed AND an adorable, bumbling dork? Looking forward to the further adventures of Lucy.

Loved the premise. Very fast and engaging. It had a Veronica Mars-ish thing going but was also a bit lighter. I was not disappointed!

Just finished this book and enjoyed it so much I was compelled to write a review. I'm a mom of two working a full-time demanding job and I found Heiress, P.I., to be a perfect bit of light-reading hilarity and entertainment to end my busy days. You will love the smart, principled, authentic Lucy Hansen and will be amused by all of the bumbling new escapades she endures as she is compelled to help her best friend (and secret crush) crack a case that ultimately reveals itself to hit a little too close to home. There's a little bit of art history in there, too. Enjoy!

I want this book to become a movie. It would be such fun to see this book come alive on the big screen because it was a blast to read as a novel. It was full of fun characters, especially the main one (who was instantly likable) with many others sprinkled in. It was a great chick lit mystery mixed with Hollywood flare. There is something for everyone. I loved that this is one that a mother could read with her older daughter or one that a book club would love to read as well. It is great when a book can be enjoyable and appropriate for a larger audience. I can't wait to see what Mahan comes up with next!
