Though I have not yet completely forsaken modern hybrid vegetables in my garden, this book certainly has given me a giant push in that direction! I now am acquainted with veggies, with such imaginative names as 'Chinese Red Noodle' beans, 'Southern Rattlesnake' watermelon or 'Lollo Rosa' lettuce, provoking a lust in me to try growing and harvesting them. The eye-popping, mouth-watering photographs of each fruit and vegetable -- from beans to tomatoes to squash -- are accompanied by flavorful recipes. More than anything, I thoroughly enjoyed the tidbits of information on the origins of each as well as the curious, lesser known historical facts.

It is evident this book was written by a knowledgeable woman passionate about her food and the many heirloom veggies, herbs and fruits she has grown throughout the years. And finally, this book takes the guesswork out of finding good, worthy sources by including a comprehensive list of suppliers, so that you can grow that which intrigues you the most.

Here is a book for both experienced and beginning gardeners, cooks and even people not into gardening -- but who love reading about flavorful food once greatly enjoyed by our ancestors. It will definitely teach and inform you...and in the end will endow you with a greater respect for the heirlooms.

I received this book as a gift and I love it, from that gorgeous, appetizing cover on. I've been pursuing heirloom (old-fashioned) vegetables and fruits for years (because they taste better), and this is a fabulous guide to the ones I might like to try. The author provides a generous selection of varieties with hints about taste and growing needs, as well as number of days required if you're growing from seed. There are recipes, menu suggestions, tips for shopping at the farmers market, storage, and how to save your own seeds. And the photographs are just mouthwatering.

This book, for me, was an eye catching experience from the start. The beautiful cover draws you into pages full of gardening information that comes to life with all the vivid photographs. I truly enjoyed learning more about different heirloom varieties, seed saving and gardening tips. I'm looking forward to trying Doreen's special recipes with Heirloom vegetables from my own garden.

I'm sorry, but the book is rather bland. I think she might be a beginner in the field. The vegetables are very commonplace as heirlooms go and the recipes are dull. For someone who is already using heirlooms, this is a big yawn.

The recipes add additional value. Very down-to-earth and practical from someone with real experience. Highly recommend to both gardeners and food connoisseurs.

More About the Author

Doreen Howard is an award-winning author, former garden editor at Woman's Day, photographer and enthusiastic gardener. In her acre of paradise on a glacier moraine in the Upper Midwest, she's grown, enjoyed and photographed nearly 300 heirloom edibles.

She has lived and gardened in every USDA Climate Zone, except frigid Zone 3, following a corporate husband in job transfers from So. Calif. to Texas, to Oklahoma to the tropics to Illinois and now to Zone 4b in the Upper Midwest. Along the way, she learned how to adapt gardening techniques, cope with temperature extremes and pick the best plants for the climate.

An admitted foodie, Howard has created numerous gourmet recipes using the fruits, vegetables and herbs she grows. Her first book in 1992 (Cooking for Cash) detailed how to win cooking contests. It was based on Howard's adventures competing in national food contests. Her winning recipes always focused on fresh produce to accentuate protein and/or carbohydrates.
