5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Quilting by Machine!
I purchased this book with the hope of finding a quilting option for finishing my tops more quickly without taking away from the beauty and design normally achieved with hand-quilting. This was a difficult step for me to take and Harriet made that step a successful one with her clearly explained and illustrated techniques, and ideas for choosing just the right quilting...

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book
Harriet has a very big reputation and I tried hard to like her and her book. I took a workshop with her and found her teaching methods antiquated. She was confusing and backward. Unfortunately, her book is as bad as her classroom instruction. There are much better books out there. Save your money. Don't buy this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Quilting by Machine!, January 26, 2006
This review is from: Heirloom Machine Quilting: Comprehensive Guide to Hand-Quilting Effects Using Your Sewing Machine, 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
I purchased this book with the hope of finding a quilting option for finishing my tops more quickly without taking away from the beauty and design normally achieved with hand-quilting. This was a difficult step for me to take and Harriet made that step a successful one with her clearly explained and illustrated techniques, and ideas for choosing just the right quilting design. I have purchased many books on machine quilt design, but this book instructs you in the actual process of machine quilting--something I have not found as well explained in any other book.

If you think you can't machine quilt on your home machine and achieve beautiful results, think again! Not only is it possible, but it is much easier than you could ever imagine! If you only add one book to your library on machine quilting, this should be the one.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4th Edition is an Extreme Makeover! Worth buying again., April 11, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Heirloom Machine Quilting: Comprehensive Guide to Hand-Quilting Effects Using Your Sewing Machine, 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
I bought the 3rd edition a couple years back as a "supply" for a beginning machine quilting class. I have referenced the book many, many times. I saw the new edition out, but assumed it was just a colorized version of the 3rd edition. I found the 4th edition at the library and checked it out for the sake of curiosity to see how different it really was. The 4th edition could be considered a completely new book. If you have an earlier edition of this book, the 4th edition is worth purchasing without a doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, October 30, 2006
This review is from: Heirloom Machine Quilting: Comprehensive Guide to Hand-Quilting Effects Using Your Sewing Machine, 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
This book has become my quilting bible. Harriet's years of quilting experience has led her to share the pit-falls of/and best of thread, needles and accessories for quilt making and quilting. She starts from the beginning - how to treat your fabric for straighter cutting, needle sizes, thread size, sewing feet plus, fabrics they are suitable for. Quilting with grids, free motion quilting and how to get started plus patterns and photos of exquisite quilts. Her book is written in clear concise language leaving no ambiguity.
I believe this book is a must on any quilters shelf whether a learner or advanced quilter.

This book shows you everything you need to know to finally FINISH all those quilt tops sitting in your closet. Harriet Hargrave has helped this confirmed hand quilter to know it is not only okay to use a sewing machine to finish a quilt, but the quilt can be absolutely beautiful as well!

The book has excellent chapters on the best way to set up your sewing room and sewing machine. I loved the authors method of basting without the need of a set of quilt frames. I am recommending the book to everyone I talk to!

I ordered Harriet Hargrave's book because my machine quilting left a lot to be desired. I read through the book cover-to-cover before I started my next quilt using her techniques. They really made a difference. Seams are flatter, more accurate. The quilt is smooth, no 'easing' blocks to make them fit. I also cut up muslin so I'd have practice squares 'at the ready' to make sure my machine and I are speaking the same tension language. I thoroughly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars not just another update !, October 13, 2005

This review is from: Heirloom Machine Quilting: Comprehensive Guide to Hand-Quilting Effects Using Your Sewing Machine, 4th Edition (Spiral-bound)
This book is awesome! I was expecting to see a couple of updated items after reading (studying) the original book by Harriet , but was I ever surprised to see an almost new book ! Oh, it still has the bare bones of all that great info , but this one really goes in depth on the actual machine quilting portion that was covered . I would definitly recommend this
( after you purchase the first one also!).
Happy quilting !

As with all Harriet Hargrave books, this one gives great detail, and lots of photos. Everything is covered from preparing your workspace, machine and quilt, to basting and finishing. Fourteen pages of heirloom designs for continuous line quilting are included to get you started. Lots of great tips!

I took a two-day class from Harriet Hargrave. This is the next best thing. Her book is a book you want to read carefully and study. It's not a quick read. It's informative and well worth the time. It is a great resource.
