One review I read described these performances as atmospheric but lacking fire. That is nonsense! Also nonsense is the view that these are merely conventionally romantic concertos in the style of Rachmaninov. The similarities to that composers work and the work of others in the romantic tradition is superficial. These are, first and foremost, the work of Villa-Lobos, and that shows from the first bars of the 1st concerto to the end of the 5th. The recording quality is warm and spacious, with plenty of detail. The performances are polished and Ortiz's work here is wonderful. So, if you are a Villa-Lobos enthusiast or want a great intro to his work, don't hesitate! I bought this original issue for a song and I'm very happy with it.

This is the original, 1992 issue of a 2-CD set which was reissued in 1997 on a mid-price, Double Decca set, and which I have reviewed under this guise. But in fact, at the time of writing, the original set sells cheaper than the reissue.

As for the compositions themselves, I refer you to my (unenthusiastic) review under the other entry: Villa-Lobos: 5 Piano Concertos - Cristina Ortiz / Royal Philharmonic Orchestra / Miguel Gómez-Martínez. The Concertos are Big Romantic Statements that seem to ramble along with many notes and not so much inspiration, and I hear little in them of what I find highly original and appealing in Villa Lobos: the knack for mesmerizing colors and the sense of dramatic impact. But those who like the concertos of Rachmaninoff or Selim Palmgren or George Lloyd, or the kind of (in my opinion, watered down - tango for export, I called it in my other review) exoticism that pervades the music of Astor Piazzola, might find more enjoyment in these works than I did.
