A real page-turner!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Heldan (Mass Market Paperback)
This one grabs you from the start. The oldest child taken from her family (as custom requires) to train to defend her people in a mysterious guard. She is picked out of the line by the leader to be his personal trainee even though his job has always made him exempt from having a trainee. Don't you just love it! My only objection is the ending. I went back and reread it several times to try to understand. It seems to me that a sequel would have been in order. There was a major skirmish with the enemy coming up, and the hero and heroine were trying to find a way to buck the system and be together. I would have liked more from these characters.

Captivating,

From the very beginning this book just takes hold of you and never lets go. I found myself at tears when I first read the book because it was so beautiful and I had to read it a second time. I felt that I was right there with Vayhawk and Senea every step of the way through it all. It's a unique fantasy unlike anything I've ever read before and I highly recommend it to anyone who is into fantasy or just wants to read a romantic and action filled story.

Senea and Vayhawk : Kicking Ja'sid Buttocks,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Heldan (Mass Market Paperback)
I am currently rereading this novel for the nth time. I've lost count. This book is my most treasured, it rocks. Senea and Vayhawk are identifiable characters, and some of the most three-dimensionally written I've seen. With their struggle with Sky, Yunab, and the Ja'sid power the warrior-style novel never had it written so good. In a sweeping story of magic, war, and unlikely love and hate, this book ranks at the top. While I'm afraid it is *sob* currently out of print, may you all be so lucky as to find a copy. You'll cherish it as much as I.

Great romance, so-so on the plot,

The story isn't really that unique, but the relationship between Vayhawk (*snort* typical mantitty name - don't you just love it?) and Senea is super hot and even this veteran romance reader found herself flushed and breathless at some of the scenes - and there wasn't even any actual sex (that's how hot it was)!
That said, for those who claim this book is particularly feminist, it's not. Senea's always second-best to her trainer (even after she attains rank) and even though both women and men are trainers, you never hear or see evidence of the women training or see the men cooking, even though both genders are supposed to do their own cooking. This isn't enough to detract from the story, but it might bug readers like me. The fantasy elements were fine. They worked, but didn't particularly draw me in or turn me away because the idea Bickmore uses aren't unique. Oh no, evil encroaching upon our lands, let's use their own power against them. *sigh* A big drawback for me was how repetitive it was, as a reader below mentioned. The descriptions of the plains drag and I skimmed those passages. The characters did a lot of the same things, in slightly different ways. Oh no, Senea is back-talking ::insert character:: and has to be chastised gently by Vayhawk. Bu the dialogue is good (short and to the point), it is full of action (fights between trainers, trainees, and the bad guys), and the "relationship" between Sky, Vayhawk, Treyna, and Senea, full of love and hate and fighting, really make it worth reading (no seriously - I usually hate these kinds of things, but it's awesomely written here, realistic and all the people are very 3-Dimensional). I kind of liked the way the book ended. A sequel would have been okay; she could have just extended the story another chapter and it would have been great too, because Bickmore never gets to the epic battle between the Ja'sid and the Heldan of this tribe. Again, not a big deal for me.

Normally I would have given this book 4 stars BUT too many scenes could be called repetitive - characters never really did much AND there should have been a sequel or a better ending.

I was looking for books to get me out of my reading rut that I found myself in and stumbled upon this little gem. Even though it was out of print I dilegently found myself a copy and couldn't have been happier. I won't spoil the plot but the only thing I have to say I didn't like and agree with one of the other reviews is that it ended like there should have been another book to this. Very sad that it doesn't have another one.

I loved this book. If you are a woman and like female centered fantasy with a romantic twist, you will love this book too. The hero is strong and brooding and the romantic tension is great. Our heroine is strong and spirited. The fantasy is the background for the romance.

This Book is Wonderful,
This review is from: The Heldan (Mass Market Paperback)
Like my title says, this book is wonderful. The characters are perfectly developed so you really get into everything they're feeling and doing. Also, the romance between Senea and Vayhawk is beautifully written, it's never tactless. Unfortunately this book is no longer in print, and the author never wrote many books. She should definitely write more though because The Heldan is one of the greatest books any sci/fi or fantasy fan could ever read.

I read this years ago, and it's one of those books I re-read all the time. Senea along with the other first born children is summoned to the Heldan fortress to train to become a Heldan warrior. Once there, all the frightened newcomers are paired with a trainer. In an unprecedented move, Vayhawk (the greatest of the Heldan warriors) selects Senea to train her. Senea must struggle to survive as she faces threats from their tribal enemies, as well as enemies within her own tribe. The fighting for ranking within the tribe, and among the tribes was intense and well written. Senea is one of those characters who surprises others again and again with her skill and strength. Vayhawk is mysterious, intriguing and practically invincible. The romance that builds between the two of them is great. I've always wished the author wrote more books with these characters, one was never enough.
