Written as a diary, this novel recounts the coming of age of 18-year-old Helen Smith, a late 1940's Australian girl living in a small sea village with her well-off and pious father. The diary is found by a fascinated French military officer who envisions Helen as a solitary girl with intense sexual desire who yearns for the outside world.

Begins with her running away from home in Australia and ending up going all over the world as a prostitute, a slave, etc.Probably Trocchi's most famous erotic work. One of the founding books of Olympia Press. Well written and erotic, even for a novel written for sex's sake.

The plot is extremely rich, and the skill of the author is very high in Helen and Desire. But do becareful not to get the Book of the Month Club edition of this book, as it was heavily censored and missed many passages compared to the other editions.

Yep, you read it correctly. Patti Smith was alluding to this book in her poem "babelogue: "each bolt of wood, like the log of Helen, was my pleasure."
