Helen Forrester omnibus,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Helen Forrester Omnibus (Hardcover)
This is one of my favourite series of all time. It is autobiographical, but written like a novel. The heroine suffers a lot but is totally unselfpitying. It concerns her family having to start life again in abject poverty in Liverpool, after being bankrupted - they had lived a wealthy upper middle class existence till then. Helen is forced to stay home (aged 11) to look after her younger brothers and sister and do the housekeeping. It has the drawback of not including the "June 1950" part (at the end of the third book in the original edition). This part summed up the happy ending of the author's life. It could have been placed at the end of the fourth section. Altogether an engrossing read and a look at how the other half lives. It covers the late 1930s and the war years. |
