Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- Kudlinski describes the major episodes in the life of Helen Keller--the illness that left her deaf and blind, the arrival of teacher Annie Sullivan, her education, and her world travels. Coverage is brief; Keller's struggle to achieve a college education is given only a few pages. However, in the information that is given, Kudlinski manages to avoid too laudatory a tone. She mentions Mr. Keller's financial mismanagement (again, with few details), the strong control Sullivan exerted over Keller's life, and the much publicized plagiarism scandal that Keller experienced at age 12. Diamond's muted black - and - white sketches lend a gentle tone to the text, which will serve as an introduction for young readers to the life and accomplishments of this famous woman. This book covers much of the same information as Nigel Hunter's Helen Keller (Bookwright, 1986), which also includes photos and color illustrations. Older readers will prefer Catherine Owens Peare's The Helen Keller Story (Crowell, 1959) or Keller's own autobiography (Doubleday, 1954). --Susan Schuller, Milwaukee Public Library

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read for girls and boys, recommended book and inspiring story, March 21, 2011
An inspiring story, a good read for children, and positive story in giving to others, as well as in overcoming adversity. It is not a complete biograpy of Helen Keller, but a short read for children. It is a book worth directing children to in the school library, or that teachers should include in the third to fifth grade classroom. Helen Keller accomplished so much despite her handicap. Her instructor was young, around 20 years old, when she started teaching Helen Keller. Her perseverance paid off, and the story can be inspiring to children, some of whom might become special education teachers or somehow involved in helping special education children. A recommended book for children.

3.0 out of 5 stars So much missing, December 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is cute. Great for a short read for a young reader. However i wish it has touched upon all that Helen Keller had done in her life. She herself said it would be awful if all she is ever remembered for was her work with the deaf and blind. She worked for women's rights, changing laws to help newborns, fighting for the rights of the poor... she was so much more than a child who was deaf and blind.

4.0 out of 5 stars A True, Inspiring Story, May 17, 2005
A Kid's Review
This book is a very inspiring story by a wonderful author. Ms. Keller's life had never been clear to me until I read this book and realized how hard it was for Helen. It amazed me that an almost blind teacher taught A BLIND-DEAF girl to speak, write, and understand the world around her. If you are looking for a touchy story, read this book and discover the magic of this amazing woman's life.
