There are a fair number of songs on this CD that are difficult to find elsewhere and fun to listen to. It's a good supplement to the other Etting collections, and a curiosity as far as Morgan goes. Beware, though, that some of these were dug up deep from the vaults and are of pretty poor sound quality.

I came across Helen Morgan years ago on the flip side of a Fanny Brice Vintage Series album. I totally fell in love with her. She sings with such purity and emotion that just draws you back into the era of speakeasys and rum runners. I don't know why Ruth Etting seems to be the larger talent here, Helen's voice is richer and lovely than Etting's ever was. When listening to the previews, please note that Helen's songs start at #15 and higher (all note Etting as the singer). I wish I could find more songs from Helen, but this is a great collection and nice to have in CD format.

These voices revive the 1920's and 1930's sound and the popular ballads sung from the stage and in the cabaret. Usually sitting on a piano. With the trademark silk handkerchief and "kohled" eyes. Both ladies were known to have disastrous private lives, which only added to the mystery of their recordings and upped record sales. Morgan died very early from addictions leaving an unfulfilled career. Etting married... again... and retired out of the limelight and was said to be surprised by the revival of her popularity via old records in the 1950's.
