Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K An inviting collection of ten familiar nursery tales that will find a place in most libraries. All of the stories are available individually, but Rojankovsky's The Tall Book of Nursery Tales (Harper, 1944) and Rockwell's Three Bears and Fifteen Other Stories (Crowell, 1975) are the only two anthologies that contain many of them. These retellings have more explanations than other versions of the same tales, but since these stories were not originally intended for the nursery school audience, this consoling tone seems appropriate. (The three bears were kind and would not have hurt Goldilocks; the people who pulled up "The Turnip" "weren't hurt a bit" when they fell.) However, the omission of the "trip-traps" from "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" is almost heretical! The full-page, full-color illustrations of dot-eyed human and animal characters convey a cheerful witlessness. Oxenbury's visual style is extraordinarily comfortable and will be enthusiastically welcomed by young listeners.
