Product Description

Size: 1 Pack

Both UVA and UVB rays from the sun can damage your skin, resulting in older-looking and less resilient skin. This damage can cause wrinkles, thickening, dark spots, enlarged or broken blood vessels and more. Topical sunscreens play an important role in protecting your skin from the sun. However, many environmental factors can reduce the effectiveness of your sunscreen, including weather, location and what you are doing in the sun (swimming, sweating, etc.).

My husband has a sun allergy and I have very fair skin.

Even if you don't have sun damage, I think protecting yourself from the sun's UVA and UVB rays has to be a plus for you.

It does seem to help prevent sunburns, and I use it myself whenever I will be in the sun for extended periods of time.

I've been doing a lot of research on Heliocare and have discovered that there are three different companies selling products by the brand name "Heliocare"--Douglas Pharmaceuticals out of New Zealand, Biopelle out of the US, and IFC out of Spain.

Through much research, I discovered that IFC is the manufacturer of this product. Biopelle just got clearance in February 2010 to exclusively distribute and market IFC's product to the US. The Douglas product (shown here)is the distributer in New Zealand.

To tell them apart, the Douglas product has the circle with the curved line underneath. (This is the IFC logo, so we know they are an authorized, legitimate distributer or there would be a serious copyright lawsuit in progress.) The Biopelle product has a fern on the packaging.

I hope my research has helped clear up any confusion. I am planning to purchase this product, but wanted to make sure that it wasn't a dangerous knockoff or otherwise unauthorized product--hence the several hours of internet research I did to track down who makes what. It is amazing to me how hard it was--transparency in pharmaceuticals should be the order of the day!!!

I have used this product for a couple of years, and it works. However, my dermatologist is very concerned about the inactive ingredients and artificial coloring. She also does not recommend non-GMP products (i.e. not Certified as manufactured according to Good Manufacturing Processes--which means you must trust the honesty, integrity, and good will of the manufacturers AND THEIR SUPPLIERS, who could be anyone from any country. While I have faith most such people can be trusted, it only takes a single bad actor to destroy the health of many people.) I invite the manufacturer to respond to this review with a re-assuring response to my dermatologist's concerns). I have switched to a new product called SunSafe Rx, which is GMP Certified, safe inactive ingredients, and the same main ingredient as HelioCare. It is made in the USA. It also contains some antioxidants and polyphenals known to protect the skin. I believe the price is comparable to Heliocare. I am an ordinary consumer, and I have no connections to any product or manufacturer. This is easily verified.

I have what's commonly called "sun poisoning" or solar urticaria. Sunlight causes chemical changes in the epidermis. I'm allergic to one of the common chemicals produced and so I end up with a rash wherever the sun hits me, mostly my arms, the back of my hands, my forehead and my neck. It's terribly uncomfortable. I itch like crazy. I've been to several doctors and most of them scratch their heads and recommend Benadryl or some other allergy medication. But those medications didn't work and they sapped me of my energy.

So I did a little research. I read about a New Zealand dermatologist, who, having heard that one of the local maori inhabitants used a native fern to treat various skin complaints, tried it on some of his own patients with chronic problems. He was delighted with the results and recommended clinical testing. The Germans and a couple other countries have since done some studies and they, too, were impressed with the results. I was desperate enough to order some and I'm glad I did. As per directions, I wait till the symptoms start in spring and then I take one pill a day for the summer months. Halleluia. Relief. When I take the heliocare, I am pretty much symptom free. I can bicycle the lakefront again! I can go canoeing! Hooray!

Interesting note, I also used to get hives when I ate oranges, grapefruits, (any citrus really) and vitamin C pills, When I'm taking heliocare, I don't. Now that's a side effect I can live with.

I was given a sample of this product by a well known plastic surgeon in Fort Lauderdale. After a skin analysis and peel to remove sun damage he told me to use strong sunscreen and try this product. It seemed safe and natural which is important to me. I ordered two bottles, one to share with a friend who always forgets his sunscreen. So far it has worked well for me. I take one on days when I am only driving around town or outside for short periods of time. I take two on days I go to the beach or ride my bike in the afternoon. I have not had any sunburn at all since starting this product. I still use sunscreen but can't reach everywhere so this helps me to feel I won't be exposed to skin cancer in areas I may have missed. Oh, and no side effects from taking it whatsoever. I like this product well enough to reorder and the coupons they sent will make it even better!
