An Imperial Comedy!,
By
This review is from: Heliogabalus (Hardcover)
I've been a big fan of Mencken's prose for decades; when I discovered he had written a play with the drama critic George Jean Nathan, I determined to get and read it. Unfortunately, only 250 copies had been printed... but when I discovered Kessinger has published a reprinting, I sent my money (with pleasure and anticipation) to Amazon.
What a delightful surprise! The depraved and decadent Heliogabalus has been reborn as a decadent, depraved gentleman of the sort that a twentieth century man can easily imagine. Heliogabalus, as Emperor of the Roman Imperium, gets to choose between eleven beautiful wives every night. Along comes a Christian beauty, who captivated the Emperor by being hard to get. Her Christian virtue drives the Emperor to distraction. Finally, he sees the "light," and returns to his old ways.
