Editorial Reviews

Import only compilation on Sony features 16 tracks. Highlights include, 'Poison', 'House Of Fire', 'Hell Is Living Without You', 'Go To Hell' (live), & 'School's Out' (live). Originally, there was a band called Alice Cooper led by a singer named Vincent Damon Furnier. Under his direction, Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical and violent brand of heavy metal that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, heavy metal, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood, and huge boa constrictors, all coordinated by the heavily made-up Furnier. By that time, Furnier had adopted the name for his androgynous on-stage personality. While the visuals were extremely important to the group's impact, the band's music was nearly as distinctive. Driven by raw, simple riffs and melodies that derived from '60s guitar pop as well as show tunes, it was rock & roll at its most basic and catchy, even when the band ventured into psychedelia and art rock. After the original group broke up and Furnier began a solo career as Alice Cooper, his actual music lost most of its theatrical flourishes, becoming straightforward heavy metal, yet his stage show retained all of the trademark props that made him the king of shock rock. --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

This review is from: Hell Is (Audio CD)
Made in UK in 2003, Serial# 511385-2, Playing Time 71:41

"Hell Is" is a 16-track compilation featuring tracks from when AC was on the Epic label, and lifts tracks from the "Trash", "Hey Stoopid", "The Last Temptation" and "Classicks" albums.

All the tracks included here are full length, and possibly feature some of the strongest material from those albums... from the opening notes of "Poison", you know this "best of" will treat you to over an hour of great AC songs; in my opinion, those albums featured some of the best musicians to accompany AC in his career.

"Poison", "House Of Fire", "Hell Is Living Without You", "Bed Of Nails" and "Only My Heart Talkin'" open up the CD, all taken from "Trash"; "Hey Stoopid", "Love's A Loaded Gun", "Feed My Frankenstein" and "Hurricane Years" (all from the "Hey Stoopid" album) follow in the line-up. Then, from "The Last Temptation", we're treated to "Lost In America", "Stolen Prayer", "It's Me" and "Cleansed By Fire".

The 4-page booklet (no liner notes or pictures) states "Fire" (the Jimi Hendrix song) as previously unreleased, but true fans know it's available on "Classicks". The CD ends with 2 live tracks from AC's stable, "Go To Hell" which was the b-side of the "Bed Of Nails" single, and "School's Out", also recorded in concert, was released on the "Classicks" CD.

If you're unfamiliar with AC's career from 1989 to 1995 (the "Epic" years), this is a great CD to grab to add to your collection; if you have a solid AC library, this CD presents nothing new... but it's still over an hour of great stuff!

2.0 out of 5 stars Buy the albums themselves, July 27, 2006

This review is from: Hell Is (Audio CD)
This is just another compilation album. It takes tracks from Trash(89), Hey Stoopid(91) and The Last Temptation(93). However being a fan of all 3 of those albums I can tell you that you will be more satsfied buying those 3 albums on there own rather then this.

However, if you havent heard anything from those 3 albums apart from Poison, then this may be a pretty good introduction to this ere of Alice's music. But then again, so would buying all the albums rather then the compilatations.
