Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Hell Bent for Santa Fe was written in 1981, then shelved for 20 years. The Texan-Santa Fe Expedition was such an obscure piece of history there wasn't a lot of interest in the event. After the Dead Man Journey book by a Texas regional author and the television movie of the event I decided to do a complete rewrite and give the book another chance. I'm as fascinated by it today as I was when I was poring through the Texas State Archives and other historical documents to write the original work.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jack Purcell's Hell Bent for Santa Fe, February 13, 2007

This review is from: Hell Bent for Santa Fe (Paperback)
As a military historian and a 6th generation Texan I found Purcell's account of the ill-conceived Santa Fe expedition to be historically factual but difficult to follow. Even though I am familiar with the route I could not keep up with where Jack Swiling was and where the rest of the expedition was at any givwn time. It is a great story told reasonably well and factually adequate but needs a little organization to make it great.
