interesting,

This review is from: The Hell Candidate (Hardcover)
The only reason I rate this book as interesting and best, is because, when I search for "Masterton, Graham", it always appears. Did he write this? If HE did, I have copies for sale. I would also like to trade and sell my copies any of His books. My orignal author on the book is Thomas H. Luke. If you have enjoyed this book, you may think it was Graham.

Not top-of-the-line Masterton, but still interesting.,

This review is from: The Hell Candidate (Hardcover)
Masterton originally published this one under his pseudonym Thomas Luke; as far as I know he's only used that name one other time (for the novelization of a 1980 movie called, I think, "Phobia," directed by John Huston of all people). It's not top-of-the-line Masterton, but not uninteresting; I wish he'd exploted the severe amorality of his main character/narrator (the would-be kingmaker pulling the strings behind a presidential candidate who seems to have signed some kind of deal with the devil). As often happens with Masterton, the most bizarre and violent occurrences are treated with almost hilarious casualness by the witnesses; this could have come off quite satiricially in "The Hell Candidate" if Masterton had explored the main character's obvious indifference to the increasing depravity of the candidate's behavior and the horrors wreaked upon various others around them. Still, Masterton's almost always good with a hook, and at keeping you interested right through the end.

I must admit I enjoyed this book. I don't recommend it for anyone who can't handle perversity and sacrilege. Sometimes it feels like the author is trying to push the envelope as far as he can to see if he can disgust you. But if you can handle it, and you are a fan of both horror and politics, this is the ideal book for you. Perhaps the reason it is no longer in print is because there is so much political content and so much horror content, and a small audience that will be interested when it goes in one direction or the other (politics or horror).
