5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic!, May 17, 2003
By
joseph schaffer (idaho falls, idaho United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hell Comes to Your House 1 (Audio CD)
I first bought this on an LP in about 1982, when I was 12 years old, at 'Zeds Records' in the middle of long beach, along with a 45 featuring 'Modern Warfare'. I have no idea what happened to my album, but still have the 'Modern Warfare' single. While playing this CD I realised the original album contained songs by 'Bad Religion', or am I mistaken? The music on this CD is absolutely great, and I was completely stoked to stumble upon this great, unique relic, as I had forgotten this album existed. I have many memories that come up listening to it, like getting arrested at an old 'Alpha Beta' grocery store off Redondo street in Long Beach, shoplifting liquor, to drink while watching 'Secret Hate' play a backyard party. Anyways, my opinion boils down to this: The bands on this cd are fantastic, unique, buy it, you will not be dissapointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great early 80's LA punk comp!, July 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Hell Comes to Your House 1 (Audio CD)
Hell Comes to Your House is a solid compilation of early 80's LA punk at a time when the scene was taking a darker turn. Tunes by 45 Grave, Christian Death, 100 Flowers and the Super Heroines are mostly in this vein, with a theatrical approach to the macabre that spans from the slow and creepy (Christian Death, with Rikk Agnew from the Adolescents on guitar) to demented ranting (Super Heroines, who frankly never did it for me). I especially like the 45 Grave stuff, with their crisp and powerful punk-metal sound and tongue in cheek horror-show attitude. The rest of the album is more straightforward hard edged punk, but's it pretty much all high-quality stuff. Social Distortion has two great early songs here, one of which (Lewd Boy) isn't available anywhere else so far as I know. Secret Hate and the Conservatives turn out some agressive high energy punk that leans toward the emerging hardcore scene. Legal Weapon, a promising band that never quite made it, has a pretty cool tune with a fuller, more produced metallic rock and roll guitar sound. For odds and ends the song by Rhino 39 has some really fun off-kilter riffing that offsets its punk agression in an enjoyably weird way, and a very young Red Cross (before they were forced to change their name spelling) turn in a respectably sloppy cover of the Dolls, presaging their later turn toward 70's glam metal. For years this album was out of print and impossible to find (and worth a fair amount for the Social Distortion tunes), so it's great that it's now on CD. And if you like this, hope for a re-issue of volume 2, which focuses on the "cow punk" and emergent glam scene in LA in the early '80's.
