Absolutely Fantastic!,
By joseph schaffer (idaho falls, idaho United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hell Comes to Your House 1 (Audio CD)
I first bought this on an LP in about 1982, when I was 12 years old, at 'Zeds Records' in the middle of long beach, along with a 45 featuring 'Modern Warfare'. I have no idea what happened to my album, but still have the 'Modern Warfare' single. While playing this CD I realised the original album contained songs by 'Bad Religion', or am I mistaken? The music on this CD is absolutely great, and I was completely stoked to stumble upon this great, unique relic, as I had forgotten this album existed. I have many memories that come up listening to it, like getting arrested at an old 'Alpha Beta' grocery store off Redondo street in Long Beach, shoplifting liquor, to drink while watching 'Secret Hate' play a backyard party. Anyways, my opinion boils down to this: The bands on this cd are fantastic, unique, buy it, you will not be dissapointed!

Great early 80's LA punk comp!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hell Comes to Your House 1 (Audio CD)
Hell Comes to Your House is a solid compilation of early 80's LA punk at a time when the scene was taking a darker turn. Tunes by 45 Grave, Christian Death, 100 Flowers and the Super Heroines are mostly in this vein, with a theatrical approach to the macabre that spans from the slow and creepy (Christian Death, with Rikk Agnew from the Adolescents on guitar) to demented ranting (Super Heroines, who frankly never did it for me). I especially like the 45 Grave stuff, with their crisp and powerful punk-metal sound and tongue in cheek horror-show attitude. The rest of the album is more straightforward hard edged punk, but's it pretty much all high-quality stuff. Social Distortion has two great early songs here, one of which (Lewd Boy) isn't available anywhere else so far as I know. Secret Hate and the Conservatives turn out some agressive high energy punk that leans toward the emerging hardcore scene. Legal Weapon, a promising band that never quite made it, has a pretty cool tune with a fuller, more produced metallic rock and roll guitar sound. For odds and ends the song by Rhino 39 has some really fun off-kilter riffing that offsets its punk agression in an enjoyably weird way, and a very young Red Cross (before they were forced to change their name spelling) turn in a respectably sloppy cover of the Dolls, presaging their later turn toward 70's glam metal. For years this album was out of print and impossible to find (and worth a fair amount for the Social Distortion tunes), so it's great that it's now on CD. And if you like this, hope for a re-issue of volume 2, which focuses on the "cow punk" and emergent glam scene in LA in the early '80's.

Mommy Dearest put the tether on those kids! Ughh we just can't have this! awwwwwwwww. The songs of ghastly pre-marital sex and
swingin drug oblivian are not allowed, oh dear, call the National Hotline for Priggery and Prudery.. You have no right not to buy this album. It's one of the best cultural documents on those people and bands and modus vivendi of the first wave of punk/goth. Here are three reasons: 1.) The 45 Grave material alone on this comp. makes it worth getting: these are alternate versions and the scarcity of 45 Grave stuff makes these all the more precious, and they likely are better than the versions that went on the original.. 2.) What is nothing less than enraging is the amount of talented bands THAT NEVER really made it: this comp shows that bands like Modern Warfare (with their excellent cover of the Stones' Street Fighting which has a superb shift in tempo and is entirely an original song but for the lyric) got unjustly ignored in the sweepstakes; the SuperHeroines also are great, and Seattle's 7 Year Bitch stole clearly the melody from the last song on this comp, though the SHs themselves sound a bit like the Slits; those who hold Social Distortion as too Pop need to hear what they sounded like in these days---they were a punk band, and Christian Death is probably the greatest thing ever to come out of Orange County, though this version of Dogs sounds identical to the album's, Only Theater of Pain; Rhino's work here is good, too, and more is available on the Dangerous House comps. vol 1 & 2, which are also MANDATORY to anyone wanting to know what happened betweem 1977--1981 in the Wild West. 3.) This comp. shows at least indirectly how Goth or Death Rock evolved from punk with its juxtapositioning of 45 Grave and Christian Death with the more straight out punks like the Conservatives (yet another reason to buy this cd). Bye Bye, & let your children play...

Awesome Socal Relic,
By
This review is from: Hell Comes to Your House 1 (Audio CD)
I came about finding this gem while looking for a studio version of Social D's "Lude Boy." Well i found the Social D song and also discovered a bunch of lesser known bands that were not too shabby either. I was already a fan of Christian Death and 45 Grave(loved the version of "Evil" on here), but I had never heard of groups like Legal Weapon, Secret Hate, or Modern Warfare. I can listen to this cd all the way through without skipping any songs. Sunny Socal punk definatley had a dark side in the early 80's that was often both campy and creepy at the same time. The sound quality is suprisingly very good and all the tracks have a srong kick to them. Highly recommended!

One of my favorite compilations, since i first heard it in 1987. Even the little-known bands fit well. I will listen to this album ALL THE WAY THROUGH,without skipping songs. I rarely do this with comp.s

Don't forget the Vol. 2!,

Although completely different, Vol. 2 has some fantastic long-lost L.A. tex-punk bands ( I don't know how else to describe them). Both Vol.1 and 2 are awesome, especially on vinyl!

Error on track listing,
This review is from: Hell Comes to Your House 1 (Audio CD)
I'm keeping this simple and to the point for the review but first there's a mistake in the track list. Christian Death did the songs Dog NOT Reject Yourself, And the song Reject yourself is done by the band 100 Flowers NOT christian Death!
Now for my review. This is a rarity that a compalation such as this comes along where every song here are great. I am the type of person who usually don't go for various artist albums but this is by far the best. I am not an advid punk fan but this made me become one. I am a Christian Death fan and a fan of the genre. A MUST HAVE!!!!!!!
