5.0 out of 5 stars An Evil Masterpiece !!!
This album is Mobb Deep at their finest. It is a journey into the heart of darkness. I know everyone likes to mention the beef they were having with Tupac at the time but apart from that it is still a dark masterpiece. Lyrically I will agree that "The Infamous" album was better in terms of subject matter but Hell On Earth is a classic in its own right. Havoc stepped up...

I would say this cd deserves 3.5 stars. I wouldn't even feel too bad about giving it 4. But it got 3 because it really dissapointed me. I thought it would be a lot better than it is. I would agree with some of the other reviews that said that it covers the same overplayed topics as many other rap cd's: guns, women, crime, etc. There is definitely nothing...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Evil Masterpiece !!!, September 2, 2007
This review is from: Hell on Earth (Audio CD)
This album is Mobb Deep at their finest. It is a journey into the heart of darkness. I know everyone likes to mention the beef they were having with Tupac at the time but apart from that it is still a dark masterpiece. Lyrically I will agree that "The Infamous" album was better in terms of subject matter but Hell On Earth is a classic in its own right. Havoc stepped up his production and each beat strikes a cord of death and despair. As usual Prodigy's lyrics are cold and menacing. The whole album is fire, excuse me, hellfire, no fillers.

My favorite tracks are Drop A Gem On Em, diss track with a tight piano, Man Down (love the drum beat on that one), Extortion (love this beat and Meth was on fire), Nighttime Vultures (love the beat and the birds of death in the beginning. Raekwon also had a tight verse), G.O.D. Pt3 (check out the after hours god remix on the cd single if you can still get it), Get Dealt With (I never get tired of this song - it never gets old), of course the title track - Hell On Earth, Give It Up Fast (Nas had a pretty tight verse too), Stll Shinin (I love Hav's use of the church organ on such a slammin beat - no other rap producer was doing this then or since). Apostle's Warning closes the album off nicely.

The other tracks I didn't mention - Animal Instinct, Bloodsport, More Trife Life, Can't Get Enough Of It were all good tracks too. There are no weak songs on here. Each song pulsates with an evil life of its own. Any true hip hop fan should have this in their collection. I've been buying (that's right buying not just listening) to hip hop since 1989 and I've never heard an album like this one before and judging by the way hip hop is now I never will. Bottom line, get this album. (An original copy not a burned one). This is one of those albums you want to have an original copy of while you can still get it. Just make sure you are spiritually grounded when you listen to it because of the darkness that consumes the thing. 5 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Hip Hop Classic, August 26, 2005

No one, and I mean, NO ONE can touch this album. Mobb Deep has hip hop on LOCK! I wish we still had this quality of hip hop today. Maybe I would still listen to present day rap.

Mobb Deep = Hip Hop!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Mobb Album By Far!, September 19, 2008

This review is from: Hell on Earth (Audio CD)
To me, Mobb Deep's appeal has always been the ice cold flow of Prodigy.

Although there were alot of lyricists on the east coast at this time who covered similar subject matter (Smif n Wesson, Black Moon, Wu-Tang etc) none of the emcees ever sounded as smooth and calm as prodigy did when he spun his crime narratives.

Prodigy was also extremely descriptive in his stories which made his best work have an ominous, almost horror movie feel. It is great stuff, some of the best lyrics ever written.

In 1996, Prodigy was at the height of his skills. This is my favorite Mobb Deep Album because Prodigy's lyrics are classic on every single cut.

Nighttime Vulture's is one of the great rap songs ever. It's beat was used heavily by other emcees on mixtapes to freestyle over around that time.

The rest of this album is on that level.

Definately a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mobb Deep- Hell On Earth, September 12, 2003
This review is from: Hell on Earth (Audio CD)
Mobb Deep's (Prodigy & Havoc) third album "Hell On Earth" (1996) is excellent. Running in at fourteen tracks, guest appearances come from Nas,Big Noyd Method Man,General G, Ty Knitty, Gambino and Raekwon. Mobb deep delivers dark hardcore memorable hip hop music from "Animal Instinct" to "Apostle's Warning". Lyrics, Beats and production are all tight. Can one be a big Mobb fan and Pac fan- of course and as one of both I can say "Drop a Gem on Em" is a powerful diss track (no hitemup) but a memorable track for sure. On "The Infamous" trife life was excellent, and the follow up on this release "More Trife Life" is also a standout track, followed by another grimy track the raw "Man Down". Love the rising beat on "Nighttime Vultures". The Lyrics, beat and Chorus on "G.O.D., Pt. 3" are off the hook. "Get Dealt With" is laced with an insanely nice piano beat, and is followed up by the albums title track "Hell On Earth (Front Lines)" another very nice track. "Apostle's Warning" closes off the album well. Really enjoyed this album and as for where it stands among other Mobb albums, I would only put it behind the classic "The Infamous" the first mobb cd I ever got and my favourite one. Mobb Deep's "Hell On Earth" is another powerful album, Mobb Deep delivers the goods with intense hardcore reality rap to remember.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough Of This Album, May 27, 2000

Rene Valencia (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hell on Earth (Audio CD)
"If" ever a group represented hardcore, dark, and grimy beats that represent ghetto life to the fullest it's Mobb Deep. Forget "if", they do exactly that. QBC's most loved Dunn-Dunns kill happy rap just like The Source put it. They stick to their formula and it's that very same formula that has earned them a spot as legends. On "Hell on Earth" they easily show why they are the hardest of the hard. There is not a single happy beat or happy subject matter on this album. Easily the album's best song is from the very own title track. "Hey yo, it's hell on Earth, who's next or gon' be first, the projects is front line, and the enemy is one time, I ain't gotta tell you, yo, it's right in front of your eyes" chants Havoc on the hook, which will have real hiphop heads boppin' their head. Of course you can't review this album without mentioning the classic G.O.D. Pt. III. Provided with one of the darkest beats ever, Prodigy raps "Lookin' for P, well you can find me everywhere, in a project right near you, I'll be right there". Another gem on the album can come on the sequel to Trife Life on "The Infamous", More Trife Life, continuing the song where it left off. More amazing cuts come in such like Still Shinin', Bloodsport, Can't Get Enough Of It, and Drop A Gem 'On Em. Mobb Deep may not flaunt how gangsta they are, cuz they don't have to. That's cuz they know the rules of ghetto life and have the talent to portray it to the fullest. Ghetto life is dark, not happy, and that's exactly what the Infamous Mobb Deep showed not only in this album, but all their work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Destined to be a hip-hop classic, March 1, 2000
This review is from: Hell on Earth (Audio CD)
The Source Magazine committed a fatal error in giving this album only four-and-a-half mics. It deserved five, without a doubt. More sparse, more violent and infinitely darker than "The Infamous," "Hell on Earth" was (thus far) the creative pinnacle for Mobb Deep. Havoc's beats got more sinister, and Prodigy's raps got more refined and equally cold. From the start (the bangin' "Animal Instinct"), the album is a non-stop whirlwind of storytelling concerning the sex, drugs, violence and hip-hop emanating from Queensbridge. There are very few disappointing moments on the album, except for "G.O.D., Pt III," whose beat and melody is really annoying, and a few mediocre production moments here and there. Highlights (there are too many to list, but) include the hollow "More Trife Life," another Mobb story about why you can't trust those project women and "Can't Get Enough Of It," which rides a dope string loop for all it's worth. This album should be in any real hip-hop collector's repertoire.

This album is a classic, there are no bad songs on here. This album has a real dark & grimey feel to it (which i love). This and "The Infamous" would be my 2 favourite Mobb Deep albums. I highly recommend this to all fans of rap. This is a must-have in your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight Classic, October 13, 2004
This review is from: Hell on Earth (Audio CD)
This is a must have for any Mobb Deep Album. The beats are straight up gangsta and theres no sign of any mainstream on this album. Most of the new rappers today have destroyed the true meaning of hip hop and have turned it into hip pop music. What is up with this garbage. The beats in this album are the scary type and grimy gritty and unpleasant as it represents the true streets of gang life and New York/Queensbridge streets. Although I presonally think The Infamous is the better one, this is definetely worth taking a look at. BRING THE TRUE HIP HOP BACK!!
