Book Description

A young man is thrown into an Eritrean secret prison without warning or cause. He is tortured and endures terrible conditions with some 300 other prisoners in a sweat-raining metal container. Finally, he makes a desperate plea to another prisoner to deliver a message to his family. If it works, he'll have a slim chance of escape. If not, he won't survive.

Selemon's book is a companion book to his mother's story, BECOME COURAGEOUS ABEBA: A STORY OF LOVE, LOSS, WAR AND HOPE.

All names and locations have been changed, and some events have been altered in an effort to protect the identity of the Habtu family so they will avoid dangerous repercussions for telling their story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The depravity of the human condition June 27, 2013
By dch822

It's impossible to read this book and not feel outrage at the depravity of the human condition.

Here's how it goes: first, there's poverty; and in a close second, conflict is hot on its heels; third, meet the dictator, who promises that once in charge he'll use his power judiciously to benefit all; and fourth, finally, here comes the big finale - in no particular order we have: lies, civil war, torture, hunger, warlords, rampant corruption, political prisoners, summary executions, a humanitarian crisis largely ignored by the industrialized world, refugees, camps, families torn apart, children made orphans, children tortured and killed.

It's enough to make you angry, yes? But is it enough to make you do one simple act that just might make a difference in the life of an innocent child who you will never meet and who will never know your name? All you have to do ... read HELL ON EARTH and the related stories from Selemon's family members. Support these ebooks so the sales proceeds can reunite families torn apart by war.

HELL ON EARTH took place as Ethiopia erupted into civil war, fell apart into two countries with the creation of Eritrea to the north, and then - these are two of the world's poorest countries, remember - they CHOSE TO CONTINUE A FIGHT that has displaced, orphaned, or killed hundreds of thousands of children.

This is real. This is not fiction. The suffering and torture you read about in this story took place - it happened to real people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hell on Earth February 8, 2014

After reading all three books, I want to know more about each story. Is Abeba okay now? Do Sahra, Michael, and John have a story to share? Just as the title of Abeba's story says, this is a brave family. What an honor to read their stories.
