I've been listening to this album for the last two weeks and one thing is certain...

It grows on you.

At first, its just a big filthy hardcore album, only done by four women instead of some guys. Its fast, dirty, and everything is produced so loud, thick and heavy that the two guitars and bass melt into a single jet engine roar that seems like its only purpose is to kick you on your (behind). Oh, sure, they do have some "lead guitar lines" here and there, but I mean that in the same sense as when I say that "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones has a "guitar solo" in it.

Another listen reveals that there are actually some decent hooks behind the sonic beat-down and that's a very good thing.

Its during the third listen that all becomes clear.

While this isn't the most original sounding album in the world, few can deny the fact that Civet sounds like a deam-team supergroup. If Motorhead and Rancid teamed up and wrote 13 songs, then somehow convinced Joan Jett to sing for them even though she had a pretty bad throat infection at the time, it probably sounded like this. Apparently Johnny Thunders composed "Son of a B----" too cause man does the music on that thing sound like something he would do.

All in all, its a big ol' album of dirty, screaming, heavy, loud,(and seriously catchy) punk rock 'n' roll. Done by four girls who sound like they could beat you up if you looked at them funny.

I've come to love it (heck, I've been listening to it in my car for two weeks straight), and you should too. Highly recommended.

I came across Civet by chance using Amazon's recommendations for me, and I'm really glad I did. What a great band and a great album. I have been missing L7, The Lunachicks and Babes In Toyland, but I just found the current version of that sound. Civet crunches and grinds with the best of the grrrl bands around. They are hard and fast and with just enough loose production to make it feel real and not overproduced (look what happened to the Donnas when they were overproduced -- disaster). Listen to the samples and you will know what I mean. I have listened to this record 31 times in the past week (thanks Apple for you iPod counter), and am thoroughly addicted to the band. Too bad they're touring Europe this summer, would have loved to catch them live. If you like hard, fast and crunchy girl rock with lots of passion and gut wrenching vocals, you will not be disappointed here.

Alright, if the previous reviewer was looking for a major socially/politically driven release, then no, this is not it. BUT... this release is fun! And if these ladies are in town.... definitely go! They are excellent onstage and very nice and genuine afterward.

Musically, I think Civet is a very good young band and have matured since their 2005 debut album, Massacre. Danni Harrowyn is a solid drummer, Jacqui Valentine is excellent on bass, Suzi Homewrecker - great lead guitar, and Ms. Lisa Graves provides the quality vocals up front. The entire band delivers with the right amount of femininity and the right amount of punk swagger... all the while making sure you know they are female, they can rock, and they can kick your @ss if provoked.

Try Civet, you may like it.

Overall, this is a great followup to Massacre. Their talent musically and lyrically has grown since their last release. The vocals are similar to that of Brody Dalle of (the now broken up) The Distillers. While, their look is similar to that of artists like Horrorpops, their music is not psychobilly, or rockabilly as tags suggest.

wow! i thought i would check this out and i am scarred for life from the lack of lyrical content and overall attitude that reminds me of pissed off 17 year old girls that just found out what hardcore punkrock is. yes, i ended that sentence with a preposition and am ending this review on this note....don't bother.
