"Brother Firetribe" bassist takes the spotlight!,
By
This review is from: Hell Or Highwater (Audio CD)
"Kings of Modesty" is a brand new melodic metal band from Finland and "Hell or High Water" is their debut album. The band also demonstrates strong symphonic elements while also borrowing elements from the progressive genre (nothing too complicated though).
Far more important for the audience, I suppose, is the fact that "Kings of Modesty" feature Jason Flinck ("Brother Firetribe") as their lead singer. This is the first time that the "Brother Firetribe" bassist puts down his guitar and takes lead vocals full time; and he proves himself to be up to the job. The line up is completed by Samuel Hjelt (G), Mikael Hjelt (K) Henkka Tuura,(B) and Rane Simoinen (D). Going back to the sound of "Kings of Modesty" it has to be said that it has very little to do with the AOR/Hard Rock style of "Brother Firetribe"; on the other hand it has much in common with "Leverage" (the band featuring Firetribe lead singer Pekka Heino). In comparison both bands rely on melodic keyboards, thick guitars and orchestrations while "Kings of Modesty" is lyrically darker and at parts far more aggressive than "Leverage". Given the band's origin and heritage you can expect a handful of strong tracks; the dramatic "Never touched a rainbow", the furious "Hourglass" the melancholic "Once upon a time" and finally the undeniable standout "Starring eyes". If you are a fan of "Brother Firetribe" or "Nightwish" this is definitely an album worth exploring, while keeping in mind that it does not make direct reference to any of the two bands musically. If you are a fan of "Leverage" and enjoyed their latest album "Circus Colossus", "Kings of modesty" is definitely the one to buy next. For extra fun play both albums back to back!

Epic Rock Still Exists!,
By
This review is from: Hell Or Highwater (MP3 Download)
The Kings of Modesty prove that epic rock still exists with Hell or Highwater. Along the lines of such metal luminaries as Queensryche, Dream Theater, and even Rush at their heaviest, this record combines new wave and progressive metal to achieve an amazing result. All that aside this record still rocks! Don't expect empty chord progressions and synthesizer fills here. Hell or Highwater is a metal record with teeth, but it is still melodic and musical.
