Just the title in today's world seems taboo!!! No matter you be Protestant, Catholic or any of the other faiths, this book will bind you to its pages! 2.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE- This book could lead you into scrupulosity.
BEWARE- If you are the type of person who constantly berates themselves and inflicts self-punishment, this book could lead you to become too scrupulous. A priest told me to put the book away and get into some lighter reading. We should all try to do our best to be good Christians, but we should be joyful and full of love. This book could lead you into despair. While...

The written vision that this book gives, from 100's of years of oral and written history, is both frightening and compelling. Do know that it was compiles over about 100 yrs ago so political correctness is all but non-existent. As a Catholic I can appreciate the writings of Fr. Schouppe, for he not only shows God's justified wrath, he also shows His blind forgiveness! The greatest part of this book is that in the last half you are given INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO AVIOD HELL! May God bless all who read this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hell and How to avoid Hell, November 22, 2002
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
I too could not put this book down. I found it very scary in the beginning but scary in a good way. It got me to go back to confession and make a good confession and to go to confession often. I thought it was very informative in explaining the sins that fall under the commandments. The book makes you realize that Hell is very real and not a place you want to be. It has increased my Catholic faith and woken me up from the luke warm place I was in in my life. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost too horrifying to keep reading, February 6, 2003
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
This book gives the most unbelievable account of hell that I have ever encountered. It really shook my faith and made me realize I was standing on shaky ground. I'm not gonna continue living my life by the '10 Suggestions' anymore, it's time to live by the '10 Commandments.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Shocking!, March 19, 2000

This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
As a former Baptist I was leary about reading this book but I am now glad I did. Thank God that I did because I am now clear about the errors of my ways and I have truly come to know the Lord Jesus Christ by entering into his one and only true church, the Catholic Church. Thank God for this book or the "once-saved-always-saved" myth would have surely sent me to hell. Dear fellow Christians, please read this book and learn about what mortal sin is and how it will send you to Hell if unrepentant. God bless!

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for All Christians!, July 2, 2006
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is essential reading for all Christians let alone Catholics and is a timely reminder that hell does exist and we should not be too complacent with our faith and end up losing the prize that Christ has won for us. To say that belief in Christ alone is necessary for salvation is a self-deluding argument that totally ignores scripture and the teachings of Christ himself.

In the Gospels, Jesus frequently speaks about hell and how hard it is to get to heaven with references to the eye of a needle and to use the narrow gate etc. The parable about separating the sheep from the goats is especially telling. When the goats who obviously believe in Jesus as they say they preached about Jesus and cast out demons in his name and yet asked when did they see Jesus. Jesus replies that they didn't visit him in prison, clothed the naked etc concluding that because they did not do good to the least of their brethren, they neglected to do so to him and the parable ends with Jesus sending them to hell. If faith alone is enough, what did the goats do wrong?

Also, the letter of James reminds us that faith without good works is a dead faith. This book ia a great reminder that hell is a reality if we don't start paying attention to our faith and doing good works as a response and evidence of our faith.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Will shock you like nothing else!, November 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is an absolute must for everyone, regardless if you are Christian or not! You will not be able to put the book down as it captivates you with an absolutely overwhelming feeling of fear and terror. It really causes you to re-evaluate your own conscience and whether or not you are on the path to heaven. This book is especially needed for those who do not know Jesus Christ and for those that do know Him but think they are "once saved always saved." The Bible clearly states that we must accept Christ into our lives in order to be saved from the fires of Hell, but we must also "work out our salvation with nervous trembling." This book discusses these points in great detail as well as many other important biblical facts about Heaven, Hell, and salvation. It's a must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars a must-have book for every Christian, June 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
I almost did not purchase this book, as it was written by a Catholic(I am Protestant). And indeed, it does contain a few less-than- flattering comments about Protestantism;however,if you can get past this unfortunate polemic, you will find this book to be the most important book which you ever purchased(other than your Bible,of course). I realize that is strong praise, but this book is truly extraordinary and unique. It presents case histories and testimonials which are more frightening than anything you've ever come across before(since the topic is about an actual-not fictional- place: Hell). This book is not for the faint of heart, as the descriptions are dramatic and "uncensored". You will not read this book and walk away the same person:if you are already a Christian, you will be strenghtened. If you are not , you will probably want to become one.

5.0 out of 5 stars a frightening but sober book. Good reading., November 20, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book several years ago. It is without question the scariest book I have ever read. It makes the exorcist movie and book look like a joke. The author is a catholic priest who shows the logic of hell, the catholic position on hell, visions of various saints and individuals who have seen hell. He also refutes the arguments of atheists and other non believers. I am not a catholic, since I believe an individual should follow what he believes to be true. However, this book centers not on persuading others to become catholics, but on the problem of injustice. The author makes a strong case for a strict order of justice in the universe. He shows how even the ancient pagans had ideas of hell. He shows that true justice is rare on earth and hence argues for the existance of a place for true justice ie,hell. It is difficult to refute his arguments for hell, which shows in all probability, there is such a place. When we see so much injustice in this world that rarely goes unpunished and the enormous amounts of evil in it,it is not too difficult to imagine that hell exists. This is a very powerful book. Be warned.

While the dogma of hell shouldn't be taken lightly, we also need to be careful not to start seeing sin where sin doesn't exist and remember God's mercy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very balanced teaching or even scary, July 12, 2002
By
"parisms2000" (Columbia, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hell: The Dogma of Hell, Illustrated by Facts Taken from Profane and Sacred History plus How to Avoid Hell (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first review at Amazon, mostly because I feel I don't have anything all that important to say about a book, but based on the fact that it had a perfect rating (The main reason why I even bought this book) here goes:

I am a fairly conservative Roman Catholic who does not shy away from teachings on sin and hell and feel very strongly that they should be the subjects of more homilies. That said, I feel this book is a bad representation of Catholic doctrine on Hell and how to get saved. I was also expecting some genuine experiences of the saints and their visions of hell (there are some truly terrifying ones out there) but mostly what I got were some anecdotes about people who did not confess a mortal sin before they died and came back to warn the living by telling them they were in hell. I also got some telling of true life disasters involving fire and people being burned alive and then the author basically saying "It's gonna be a trillion times worse than that in HELL!"

The book also comes across as legalistic in the addition "How to Avoid Hell" While Catholics do believe that Salvation is faith working through love, you would not really come away from this book with that knowledge, you would probably be more inclined to join the ranks with our fundamentalist friends who say that Catholicism is works salvation. This book did not have any real errors per se, it just did not tell the whole story and was very one sided.

I give it two stars because it did have some genuinely good advice for starting the Christian life and staying away from sin. Which God knows we need in the Church these days.

God Bless everyone
