Book Description

July 2006
The famous British novelist and playwright Piers Paul Read presents his lively, thought-provoking reflections on wide ranging spiritual topics with his usual brilliance and insight. When this best-selling writer turns his attention to a subject he holds most dear, his Catholic Faith, as well as to religious and cultural issues of our times, he provokes delight and inspiration, as well as some fury and controversy.

Hell and Other Destinations is an illuminating volume that presents a selection of Read's most elegant and memorable writings on subjects ranging from Christians and Jews, liberation theology, and The Da Vinci Code to sexual desire, saints and Pope Benedict XVI.

4.0 out of 5 stars Varied reflections on various topics by an author of unvaried quality, September 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Hell and Other Destinations: A Novelist's Reflections on This World and the Next (Paperback)
In this book Read has gathered a collection of many of his essays written through the years, particularly it seems in the last few years. Some of his essays were a bit hard for me to grasp because they seem to solely address a British audience on concerns of the Catholic Church in Britain. Yet even these essays offered nuggets for consideration. The rest fo his essays covering the gamut from liberation theology to feminism to a moving portrayal of St. Margaret Clitherow are really impressive. You may not always find yourself in agreement with Mr. Read, but I suspect you'll always find that he's at least made you think, and in the process probably has given you a few insights as well.

Excellent essays on the Church today. The two sections of essays titled THE CHURCH & LIBERATION THEOLOGY are a must read for Catholics faithful to the magisterium.Important information on forces that are trying to destroy the unity of the Catholic Church.

First Sentence:
ALTHOUGH THE LAITY IN THE Catholic Church has been encouraged since Vatican II to play a greater part in the life of the Church, it may seem presumptuous for an author who has studied neither theology nor ecclesiology to write a critique of the Church's current eschatological thinking. Read the first page
