I love biographies and this book was very enjoyable. I started reading the book on a Friday night and couldn't put it down. I enjoy quick-read type books like the ones Karen writes, as I don't have much spare time to read long novel type books. The Roller Derby Queen gives inspiration to achieve your life goals no matter what type of hardships you are raised with. More women should have her gutz. Buy it today!

A true story of someone making it against the odds. Cindy was a pioneer in her own way. This is a fast paced, informative and entertaining biography.

A great read! Wonderful story about a former star in the bone jarring sport of Roller Games! Would make for a great motion picture! I highly recommend the book even if you're not a sports fan.

Incredible is right. This book is incredibly awful! Do not waste your time. For the record,I enjoyed roller derby as a kid. The author has no style and the book is written in a rambling "she said" method. One can not recapture the essence of roller derby with this mess. If Ms. McCoy's story was incredible, the author's ineptness kept it a secret. At the risk of being unkind, zero stars.(I was forced to give one star.) This book reminds me of grading really bad grade school essays (unimaginative and uninspiring). I acquired Hell on Wheels as a Kindle freebie, and I felt ripped off.

Hell on Wheels is subtitled "The Incredible Story of "Rookie Roller Derby Queen' Cindy McCoy", but it is really a story about a young lady's life and the events that shaped her. Ms. McCoy's story is full of entertaining anecdotes, some funny, some cute, some sad. There is enough to give you a peek at what shaped the person, but I would have enjoyed hearing more about the Roller Derby itself. I would have enjoyed hearing about what she thought of the T-Birds in the '80s when it was almost like pro-wrestling on skates with the over-the-top personalities. It's not that the stories about Cindy McCoy's life were not interesting, I just believe it would have added to the story.

Some biographies read like a dry recitation of details. This is not the case with HELL ON WHEELS. Author Karen Mueller Bryson gently leads the reader through the harsh and unrelentingly unfair tale of Cindy McCoy's youth. A youth that molded this young woman into the determined and talented athlete who deserved every accolade she earned during her roller derby years. The author delicately handles the sensitive issues in McCoy's life and shines a light on the strong personality who is the star of this appropriately titled book. Excellent source material for a feature film!

As the title says, Incredible Story! A lover of roller skating myself, this was a must read and I wasn't disappointed. Author Karen Mueller Bryson uses perfect and sensitive language to express how Cindy McCoy beat the odds through an emotional and social roller coaster to achieve her dream of becoming a Roller Derby Queen. A fantastic, feel good, well-written story that will inspire anyone, skating lover or not. When's the movie coming out?

The title of this book is "Hell on Wheels: The Incredible Story of Rookie Roller Derby Queen Cindy McCoy". As such, I expected far more excitement from the writing. I'm sure Cindy's story is actually very interesting, but this book was so lacking in detail that it detracted from the story. I don't know much about roller derby, and I suspect that many people who might pick up this book based on the title are in the same boat. It is to the author's benefit to rewrite this book so that there is an opening scene explaining the ins and outs of roller derby, in an exciting but educational way. The next few scenes need to be about Cindy's childhood, and make clear the challenges she faced. Once the groundwork establishing how Cindy got into roller derby is laid, the author needs to write about Cindy's actual experience as a derby girl. Climax the book with the most important derby match of Cindy's career and her triumph in that match. Here the author should end the book, then write an epilogue explaining what Cindy is up to in the present. What happened to her after her derby days were over?

So much is missing from this book. It could be much, much better. If you want an interesting, well-written biography, read Unbroken. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
