It's fun to say Hell Yes!,
By Jeanne Wolfe "Jeanne" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hell Yes!: Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life (Hardcover)
I love this book. It's life-changing and you can start using the Hell Yes! philosophy as fast as you can say Hell Yes! I read the book out loud to my husband in the car on the way to vacation, and we've had fun shouting out Hell Yes! or Hell No! to family decisions that need to be made (do this quietly around young children perhaps). It's a quick litmus test for where we stand. Also, I'm sending this book to all of my friends who are always complaining about how busy they are, but keep booking too many things on their calendar and then exhausting themselves even more.

Great Practical Advice,
This review is from: Hell Yes!: Two Little Words for a Simpler, Happier Life (Hardcover)
This small, square book is meant as a quick read, not a long self-help tome. Each page might have just a few words - "Yes!" or "And anything worth doing" or an image of people boarding a plane. The key here is that it is meant to be a quick wake-up call. If you need long, drawn out instructions, then move along to another book. If you'd like a book to scan and refresh your resolve, this will do it.
Pretty much any self help book you read - and most religions as well - will tell you to determine your life's priorities and to work diligently towards them. Do not let yourself get sidetracked by inessentials. Yet modern society bombards us with distractions. Email invitations from people we rarely know. Pressure from work or school to take on new projects. We feel guilted into decisions, pressured into things we really are not that thrilled about. This book gives you a kick. Are you thrilled about this party, or responsibility, or task? If not, then DO NOT DO IT. If you fill your life up with tons of things you aren't keen on, how could you ever have time in your life to do something you really love? You can't, because you are too busy. And you are too busy because you chose to accept "less than great" matches for you. Yes you might feel guilty saying no at first. But here's a scenario. Say the PTA asks you to volunteer for a bake sale. You say no. They move on to the next parent and find someone who loves to make cupcakes! Now the other parent is thrilled and very happy. You have free time and can do something YOU love. Everyone wins. These situations can only occur if each person chases their dreams. The key is not to try to see if something is "slightly better" than something else. If you feel only a mild inclination to take on a new project, then give it a pass. By having time free in your life, you will have less stress, and will have the ability to say "yes!" when that perfect project comes along. Well recommended.

Short but sweet - a valuable life lesson,

Well, it's that time of year again - graduations are occurring all over the country, both for high school and for college. If you're looking for a small gift, maybe in addition to other gifts or for a student you may not know that well, then this would be perfect.
Hell, Yes! is, essentially, a very small reminder on why we should all remember to only take on the things in life that will truly make us happy. Of course, there is a caveat - some things are absolutely necessary whether they make us happy or not...changing my toddler's diapers being a prime example. However, when faced with as many decisions as we are on a daily basis, it can certainly be helpful to realize that we do not always have to say yes. It's a terrific life lesson that comes in a very small, attractive and easy-to-read package. In fact, it wouldn't be out of place in anyone's library!

This lovely little book is part poem, part meditation, and mostly a great reminder to focus on the right things to feel better about your life. It would a fantastic gift to friends and a very good book to keep handy to remind yourself how to clarify, and thus simplify, and while still feeling like you are living a fulfilled life. Highly recommended!

Too often we make things overly complicated. "Hell, Yes!" serves to remind us of a simple rule for making decisions that will unclutter our lives and keep our focus on what is important. This book is all about how to prioritize by the moment and it accomplishes this in a way that we can all remember and use daily. It is a quick read with great illlustrations that all serve to effectively deliver a powerful message. Hey, it ain't that complicated!

Like another reviewer here, I immediately thought of all the type A, over-worked friends I could give this book to. But then I noticed that I kept picking it up before responding to invites I didn't really want to accept and projects that weren't doing my bottom line enough good. Turns out I need this book right here on my own desk! I love the no-nonsense smarts on every page. If you've ever said , "yes" when what you meant was, "Hell, no!" run don't walk to the check out for this book.

I love this powerful little book! It takes just minutes to read but it can make such a difference. First, I thought of all these other people who needed to know the simple secret that Baskin shares (you know, all of those other people I should give this book to, who clutter their lives too full of commitments and to do's), then I had to admit that, well, maybe even I (ahem) could use it. I'd just say, this book is a "Hell Yes". Go get it, before you sign up to take on one more thing. And thank you Ms Baskin.
PS my teenage daughter loves it too. |
