5.0 out of 5 stars not the usual live DVD *^&*#@#!#$%^%&^%#%@@*&^%*&(^@$%$, December 15, 2003
This review is from: The Hellacopters - Goodnight Cleveland (DVD)
And it is not just another live DVD in the usual style, but the main feature is "Goodnight Cleveland", a documentary where the video camera follows the band across the USA, starting out in Cleveland until the end of their tour in New York, as written in the back, "fly on the wall", meaning that we get everything from the check-in at the hotel over the arrival at the club to the after show, we get it all. So it is quite interesting that the shows themselves hardly are featured here, but the emphasis rather is on the surroundings, showing what a tour brings with itself.

The band around former ENTOMBED drummer Nick Royale is followed in the style of the Seventies, which is not exactly the best thing for the quality of the pictures, but brings us a similarly authentic atmosphere as the music of the Rockers. In the documentation we can see that the guys are absolutely down to earth and don't let the big star hang out (no, not what you are thinking again!), they do their own laundry, help setting up the equipment, searching for their own food (where the whole thing can get a little hard if you are a Vegetarian) and at the end, before leaving for Sweden, drummer Robert Eriksson tries to find some more sleep in the hotel lobby, but Whitney Houston cranked up to 11 doesn't help, funny anecdote. We also get material of radio interviews, photo sessions and more things like that, which we normally do not get to see.

As mentioned before, the musical outtakes are hidden in the special features, where I have to say that I do not know much about the musical history of the guys, but I have been told that many classics can be found here. And we also get a few soundchecks with musicians of their support band GAZA STRIPPERS, here on vocals, there on guitars, then on drums, which also is quite interesting to see/hear.

For die hard fans of THE HELLACOPTERS we then also get real video bootlegs of early live shows, even still with Dregen on vocals (now with the BACKYARD BABIES), the quality at times is pretty adventurous, but very authentic and definitely unseen before, that alone should be enough for the most fanatic fans to get this DVD. And here we also can see how the sound of the Swedes has changed throughout the years, away from the snotty Punk influence towards a more rocking sound, which is just as honest, though.

The fact alone that "Goodbye Cleveland" is not the usual live DVD gives this disc its very own charm, which is even furthered by the band being so very natural. Even if you are not the big fan of the sound of THE HELLACOPTERS, this DVD still is recommendable, because the whole thing is just a lot of fun to watch. (from @ ALex Metal Observer)

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Top Notch Rock Film, December 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Hellacopters - Goodnight Cleveland (DVD)
It's not everyday that bona-fide rock stars allow you in to see the real deal. Back home in Sweden, these guys are rock stars. In the US they still have to work it. This is a look at touring life like I have never seen before. And I can't imagine a more well-adjusted bunch. They actually make it look easy!

5.0 out of 5 stars a Real Rock Doc, November 28, 2003
This review is from: The Hellacopters - Goodnight Cleveland (DVD)
I thought this might be a Spinal Tap spoof (spoofing the spoof?) because of the title's reference, but was pleasantly surprized to find a real slice of life portrait of a very likable band on the road. The Hellacopters really rock the way nobody seems to do these days. This movie gives glimpses onto the stage while focusing on the day to day grind of touring. I nice choice rarely taken.

And if you are already a Hellacopters fan, this DVD is loaded with extra audio tracks and rare footage. It is apparent that a lot of time & effort went into this release. Highly reccommended for fans and new-comers alike.
