Must have for any MH fan,

Machine Head have been known for their live show. Even though most bands claim that is their fortay, when it comes to MH - they really mean it. This cd is a perfect example of why they have gained such notority over the years. They mix in the old with the new and blend them both together with their patented live style. If you have liked MH at any point in time, this cd is a must have! You can't make a better live cd!!

This cd is the first live cd i have ever purchased, and i must say it is great. I havent listened to Machine Head long maybe 4-5 years. This is in my opinion one of their greater cd's. I would also reccommend this to a new fan so they can truly appreciate how great Machine Head is withought all the studio equipment.

I wrote a review for this a while ago, but after seeing MH live I have defenitely changed my mind. The setlist on this album leaves alot to be desired, but the production is more than adequate... and songs like davidian are still the baseball bat to the face they were in 1994 on burn my eyes.
I guess my only real problem with this album, is the presence of anything from supercharger, and to a lesser extent the burning red. This does the live show aboslutely no justice, believe me machine head are 100 times more pissed off and hungry in person than on here. I cant change the rating, or else id give it three stars... but this is still pretty cool, like if you want to hear none but my own but dont have burn my eyes (shame on both of us)

This is the best live performance Machine Head can do,
By A Customer

This live cd has all solid performances of some great Machine Head songs. Some notable tracks are 'Ten ton hammer', 'Old', 'I'm your god now', 'The blood, the sweat, the tears', 'Davidian', and 'Take my scars'. Though obvious overdubs in the recording are evident, and Robb Flynn admits to it, its probably overall the best live show Machine Head could put onto cd. The most outstanding performances are definitely 'None but my own' and 'The Burning Red' (2 extra tracks from a 2002 show, thankfully without the [weak]novice guitarist ahrue luster.) I saw a Machine Head show in New york city and Luster was so painfully horrible. His guitar kept on getting unplugged from the amps as he was bouncing around the stage like a fool, and it always took their crew a disturbingly long time to get him plugged back in. Not to mention his style [is weak], and he couldn't play a solo to save his life. Robb did all the solos. I miss Logan Maders loud, powerful, heavy guitar work.

The first official live album from Machine Head, mixed by Colin Richardson (Cannibal Corpse, Fear Factory, Napalm Death), is one of the best live recordings you'll ever hear on cd. Fans of Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change.... will probably hate the more recent stuff they've put out and will know that the music here was recorded back in 2001 and 2002, but don't judge this live album just on that. Know that these guys live for playing live, and that this is a testament to that.

Being the dedicated Machine Head fan that I am I had to go out and grab this cd right away. Even if it was a live album. I'm usually not a big fan of live discs but I must say that this one totally blew me away. I know a lot of people have been unhappy with the way Machine Head has progressed musically. I on the other hand love everything they have done. The aren't as metal as they used to be but I feel everything they have done still rocks hard. I have seen them live once and they were awesome but I wasn't completely dazzled. Everything in this album is played to perfection and Rob shows off his skills as a frontman very well. He knows how to play the crowd and has the perfect live persona. Even for those of you who prefer the older material will love this due to the fact that they all sound like they came off the first two albums and are all very heavy. The standout tracks are "Take My Scars", "From This Day" and "Crashing Around You". Trust me you will not be dissapointed with this album. This is not only a thank you to the fans as Rob explains in the liner notes but also something for you to chew on until the next awesome Head cd comes out! Play it LOUD!

Machine Head - Hellalive,

Hellalive was the first live album from Machine Head, recorded primarily in 2001 at the Brixton Academy in London and released in 2003.
The band play a mixture of material from all of their studio albums up until that point, to an excited crowd. The band seem genuinely pleased to be on stage and playing which gives the concert a great feel. Their performance is absolutely electric and even songs from their critically reviled Supercharger album sound amazing on this live album, as the band play them so hard and passionately. Hellalive works almost as a greatest hits package, delivering every song that ever had a music video up until that point in the track listing. All the old favourites like `Ten Ton Hammer,' and the classic `Davidian,' are present and correct and performed extremely well. Two of the tracks feature future guitarist Phil Demmel and were taken from a different date, one year after the main concert, which makes up for the cover songs which the band did not include on the cd from the original concert. Overall, Hellalive is a pretty essential Machine Head release. The performance is great, the track listing is comprehensive (this would be a perfect album to buy as a first album by the band as it gives you a flavor of all their first four albums) and the sound is pretty good as well. Obviously, this isn't going to be as good as the Elegies DVD because there are no visuals, but as a Machine Head live cd I have absolutely no complaints.

One of the best live albums ever!,

They say the mark of a good band is when they sound better live than on record. Machine Head - Hellalive is a perfect example of that. Songs from the slightly overproduced Burning Red album feel much more loose and free and sit nicely along side classics such as Old, Ten Ton Hammer and Davidian. But the highlight of this album is by far the song 'Crashing Around You' given a brilliant haunting intro by Robb Flynn, the song takes on a whole new life and will always be the preferred version to go to for all MH fans.

I, being a Machine Header since 1994, was disappointed by 2001's lackluster effort "Supercharger". I've never doubted the band's talent in spite of their lapse in creativity. "Hellalive" reaffirms my faith in Machine Head and reminds me of how talented they truely are. Let's face it, Machine Head's a killer live band. Rob Flynn's vocals sound great whether he be in a vocal booth or on stage.Containing 15 "best of" tracks, Hellalive contains the ferocity of past albums like The More Things Change and Burn My Eyes.Recorded at London's Brixton Academy, Machine Head create some magical moments with songs like "Old", "Ten Ton Hammer","The Blood, the Sweat,The Tears",amongst many others. This album is anything but subtle. Aside from the beating your ears take from the instruments, you've got frontman Rob Flynn working the 13,000 strong crowd like a spazzed out cheerleader .... Like MH's Bay-area brethren, Metallica, they bring enough audio fire power to level a city. I hope this album is an indication of what MH will do on future releases. Metal is their their true calling, they should'nt be anything less than that. This is essential Machine Head listening for metal fans. |
