Book Description

Hellblazer July 4, 2007
Award-winning novelist Denise Mina (The Dead Hour, Deception, Field of Blood), one of the hottest rising talents in crime fiction, takes the hard-drinking master of bad-luck magic on one of the most haunting chapters in his macabre career.

This volume features Constantine facing perhaps the most difficult task of his life: a dream of universal empathy that proves to be hell on Earth for Glasgow. He must gather up all the happy people he can and get them to Glasgow in order to stop a tsunami of bad vibes from overwhelming the world.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The direct sequel to Empathy Is the Enemy (2006) finds magician John Constantine in Glasgow, where a psychic epidemic of empathy has provoked mass suicides among those exposed to other people's unbearable memories. Worse, the infection threatens to spread throughout Britain, then globally. To counter it, Constantine puts out a televised call for happy people, and the fate of humankind depends on the outcome of a soccer match. Crime-novelist Mina provides a stronger plotline than this series usually sees, and she nails the characterizations of Constantine and his established supporting cast. Manco's dark, moody art serves her well. Flagg, Gordon

4.0 out of 5 stars The conclusion to Empathy, February 23, 2009
By

This review is from: Hellblazer: The Red Right Hand (Paperback)
This trade brings about the completion of the previous Hellblazer graphic novel Empathy is the Enemy, an intriguing story that kept the reader anxiously awaiting its conclusion. However like many other second volumes before it, it ultimately fails to deliver on the same level of quality that the initial book produced, with very little of import actually occurring, therefore making one wonder if the inclusion of extra pages was done primarily for the purpose of selling another volume. While there is some minor plot development transpiring, most of the scenes come down to verbal jousting among the main characters without any major furthering of the narrative being provided. Additionally, like many other Hellblazer trades, the final dispatching of the evil entity is accomplished ineffectually, involving more smoke and mirrors than a convincing, rational scenario. Despite these shortcomings, Denise Mina's competent prose does help to offset the story's lack of progression and compelling resolution, but the entire outcome could have been told more efficiently, and while doing so, probably keeping it to just one volume as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful, May 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Hellblazer: The Red Right Hand (Paperback)
EMPATHY IS THE ENEMY was such a wonderful Constantine story, I couldn't wait to read the follow up. Unfortunately,
THE RED RIGHT HAND couldn't hold a candle to its predecessor. Whereas EMPATHY was intriguing, subtle and frightening,
this one was bogged down in endless exposition and just downright lazy story-telling. Ms. Mina is clearly a very
good writer (as evidenced by her previous work), but here her work falls flat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Story Arc, January 8, 2008
This review is from: Hellblazer: The Red Right Hand (Paperback)
Ancient evil forces, lost friends, trickery and beguile, black magic and bad luck, rumpled trenchcoat and silk cut cigarettes.

Another great Constantine story arc concludes.
