The End of an Amzazing Run!, June 3, 2009
This review is from: Hellblazer: The Roots of Coincidence (Paperback)
With this story The Roots of Coincidence, Constantine ("rhymes with fine") comes face to face with the synchronicity highway he has been riding his entire life. Why for instance does he always end up at the wrong place at the right time? And how has he been cloaked against the deadly Mako without his knowledge? Who exactly is pulling Constantine's strings? All of these questions are answered in the conclusion of a great Hellblazer run. I actually started my Hellblazer collection with Andy Diggle's run-the first story being Joyride-, and was subsequently hooked. Diggle loves to play with the character and actually have fun with him which is a nice return to form as the character was a LOVABLE bastard under Delano and Ennis' runs. This story actually had me rooting for Constantine, whereas many authors that have Constantine constantly brooding leave a bitter taste in my mouth. Don't get me wrong, Constantine deals with some very heavy stuff in this story, as always, but he does so with a snear and a laugh. And my God, is he a bastard- you won't believe what he uses as a power source to take down his enemies! To me, this is what the character is all about, which is why the movie didn't work well- too much brooding. John knows he's a bastard, but the stories get bogged down when he hates himself. If you like the John Constantine: Hellblazer series, then you will love this one. It's the best, most exciting, and fun run out of the bunch that I've read so far. And yes, I've read Mike Carey's run, which was good and had great canvases for the storytelling, but it moved a bit slow and too heavy for me- whereas this run really gets down to who John is as a personality, and doesn't forget that it's a piece of ENTERTAINMENT. Pretty great. I also think that the artwork is excellent and perfectly compliments the story. Like I said, this storyline turned me into a Hellblazer junkie and because of it I have collected all of the trades that are still in print other than Azarello's run- and that's saying something. So look to it, mates! You won't be disapointed with Diggle's run if you truly appreciate the character and his roots.

A Great Finale from Diggle, September 5, 2010
This review is from: Hellblazer: The Roots of Coincidence (Paperback)
In the two decades of publication, John Constantine has attracted many different creators who have left their unique marks on the character. Andy Diggle is one of the more recent ones as he managed to revitalize the magigican and return him to his roots over an excellent run. "Roots of Coinicdience" concludes his tenure, tying together threads not only from his run, but from across Constatine's entire history. The story picks up where "The Laughing Magician" left off. Constantine's gambit to pit the African war mage Mako and the scheming Lord Burnham against one another has only partially succeeded. While Mako killed Burham's magician, the two have come to a working agreement. Mako will fashion Burham's Soul Jar in exchange for the Lord's Hell Mirror. Knowing that he's outgunned, Constantine embarks on a quest through the Vatican City and Turkey to acquire the tools needed to even the odds. But the search for a weapon will lead him not only to a final confrontation with Mako and Burnham, but to answers regarding his life and the synchronicity wave. Diggle's characterization and writing is spot on, as his attention to the mythology of Constantine. The artwork Giuseppe Camuncoli and Leonardo Manco is excellent, gritty, and stylized -- a perfect fit for the world of Hellblazer.
