5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation of tasteless comics!
I think some of this stuff will appeal more to people who are into R. Crumb than Mike Mignola. It's hard to find stuff that's this sophomoric and filthy but drawn this well. I thought it was funny as crap, especially the Sparky Bear thing.

First off this let me say that plenty of people could be/have been/will be easily offended by this comic, so if your feelings and ego are easily bruised stay away from this. If you read Mad Magazine you'll recognize Bill Wray's style from the Monroe comics. Stephen DeStephano (The Venture Bros) draws the Harvey-styled Huge Retarded Duck and Wendy the Sickly Witch.Dave Cooper draws an amazing sequence where Hellboy Junior meets Idi Amin and halucinates from eating mushrooms. There's also a great Basil Wolverton tribute. Even Mike Mignola's contributions, which are drawn the same way as Hellboy Senior, are hilarious.

Anyway if you think both Mad Magazine and Tijuana Bibles are funny I think you'll like this. Great stuff.

2.0 out of 5 stars From the perspective of an open minded (hopefully) Hellboy fan..., April 17, 2011

First off this let me say that plenty of people could be/have been/will be easily offended by this comic, so if your feelings and ego are easily bruised stay away from this. From a fan of Hellboy standpoint I'm highly disappointed in this product, it's a pile of creative feces of Mignola and Wray to be blunt, while Mike's artwork and writing are still awsome, divine intervention itself could not lift this comic from the creative void in wich it was dragged from.

That being said, the comic never once makes any claim of being more then that, and in fact several times threw out the comic the "real" Hellboy (and Abe Sapian even) pops up to let the audience know that it's all a bad dream... well several bad dreams. Mostly this is Bill Wray's show more then Mikes it seems, the vast majority of the humer being offensive, rude, crude, and well it's not juvinille cause juvinille is more cultured and sophisticated to be honest. In it's clear confession of what it is lies it's salvation I suppose. If you have a profane sense of potty humer this will probably keep you in stiches but I honestly cannot recommend it to any Hellboy fan and wont. I knew more or less what it was when I bought it, having browsed through it in a comic store once, I've read the whole book cover to cover and while there are "good" jokes in it and awsome art (mostly from Mike) I highly doubt I'll take it off of my shelf ever again. I own it for complitions sake but won't recommend it to even completist fans of Hellboy, how ever if your a fan of Ren and Stimpy (apologies if I got the names wrong) You'll probaly love it.

The stories themselves are varied with several having nothing to do with Hellboy in any shape or form... these comics are mostly tributes/desecrations of famous old time cartoon's and kid hero's from Casper the Friendly Ghost too Smoky the Bear. All I'm gonna say about these is... ugh... sooooo not my style of humer. The comics with Hellboy Jr. mostly deal with Hellboy insuring that Adolf Hitler is punished and stays trapped in Hell & Hellboy himself gets something to eat instead of Maggots. I did'nt find these comics to be particerly amusing or entertaining honestly but once again, not my style in the first place.

In closing I have one thing to say and I've decided to quote the red man himself... "Who the HELL thought this was a good idea!?" (stupid imp in the background) HE HE HA HAAAA!

4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader, September 3, 2007
This review is from: Hellboy Junior (Paperback)
Very funny parody tales of a young Hellboy. Various different styles and artists throughout. There are bits and pieces from Hellboy Junior getting a car to much more surreal and underground styled pieces, so perhaps something for everybody. More Hellboy, in general, is a very good thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars I've Got Only One Thing to Say -- Huge Retarded Duck!, July 22, 2004

You don't have to like Mike Mignola's Hellboy character to LOVE Hellboy Junior. Heck, you don't even need to have heard of Hellboy to have rip-roarin?, laugh out loud, pee in your pants, bust a gut good time. While a portion of this is no doubt due to Mignola, the real star of this Hellboy extravaganza is Bill Wray, of Ren & Stimpy fame.

Wray rips Mignola's wonderfully gothic character from his normal mystery-researching, heavily shadowed milieu, turns him (a la Hot Stuff) into a youthful diaper-wearing devilwho hasn't made a name for himself yet and drops him smack dab in the middle of a late 60's-early 70's underground comics version of Hell -- complete with guest appearances (and lots of nasty trickery) by Adolph Hitler and Idi Amin!

In addition to Hellboy's misadventures, you're treated to such memorable characters as Sparky Bear, the Ginger Beef Boy and my favorites, the Wolvertons & Huge Retarded Duck.

If you think you'd enjoy serious talents like Wray and Mignola embracing a different brand of comic storytelling, you could do a lot worse than picking up this book!

This book is horrible, unfunny, and an insult to the rest of the Hellboy series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Offensive, September 6, 2004
This review is from: Hellboy Junior (Paperback)
If you are like me and love Hellboy, avoid this at all costs. The only two harmless and humorous stories are by Mignola himself and are quite good. They may make this worthwhile for a completist. However, the rest is complete filth and definitely X-rated. This book is rife with scenes of rape, molestation, excremet eating, and Adolf Hitler as a pal all played for laughs. I felt dirty just for reading it. Absolutely NOT in the true vein of mignola's "Hellboy."

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Taste Personified, August 6, 2004
This review is from: Hellboy Junior (Paperback)
The Hellboy series is so well-done that the Hellboy Junior book comes as a surprise. These stories are witless take-offs on the once-popular Harvey comics for small children - Hot Stuff the tough little devil, Wendy the good little witch, Baby Huey, and so forth. If your idea of humor is to see how outrageous something can be, you may find this book funny; if not, then not, for it lacks humor of any other kind. Personally, I grew tired of depictions of disembowelments and the damned being forced to eat feces.

2.0 out of 5 stars What is this?, January 19, 2005

I felt embarrassed reading this in public. The art is childish, the humor is forced and sophomoric and not funny. They should have read each other's stories before they went to press; most of them make the same joke of Hitler being tormented in hell. It got old real quick.

The book gets two stars for each of Mignola's contributions. As usual, everything he puts his hands to turns to gold. The artwork is charming, haunting, and with a few spare words, he gets real laughs. How does he make it seem so easy?

I don't regret buying this, since there are a couple of gems in it. The rest is surprisingly awful. It's the kind of material that makes some people turn up their noses at comics.

This is the worst graphic novel I've ever read. A few parts are funny but most of it is just sick. If you are a fan of Ren&Stimpy, Cow&Chicken or I Am Weasel style drawing, you might like it. Otherwise, give it a pass. My copy is heading to the used book store.
