Book Description

Military History of Texas Series August 31, 2004
During the course of the Second World War, the United States Army raised and maintained eighty-nine combat divisions, including sixteen armored divisions. Most of those units were created during the war and served only for the duration of the conflict. After going overseas and fighting to achieve victory, most of the World War II divisions were disbanded and faded into obscurity.

This heavily illustrated narrative is the story of one of those units, the 12th Armored Division, which trained on the plains of West Texas at Camp Barkeley near Abilene. From its initial action, to the liberation of Nazi death camps, to the ultimate victory and peace, the division's story serves as a vehicle to study the many temporary army units that served our country during its most trying time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The fascinating true story of the 12th Armored Division, December 13, 2004
This review is from: Hellcats: The 12th Armored Division in World War II (Military History of Texas Series) (Paperback)
Written by a military historian and marine corps veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm, Hellcats: The 12th Armored Division In World War II is the fascinating true story of the 12th Armored Division during World War II, from its training on the plains of West Texas to its initial action, the liberation of Nazi death camps and victory. An eye-opening account drawn from interviews and secondary sources alike, illustrated with vintage black-and-white photographs and rounded out appendices detailing a chronology, lists of those left behind, overseas wartime assignments and more. A superb addition to military history and reference shelves.

This review is from: Hellcats: The 12th Armored Division in World War II (Military History of Texas Series) (Paperback)
In the history of the armor divisions from World War 2, it is the higher numbered divisions (11th, 12th, 14th, etc) that always are given less than their proper credit. This book goes a large way in righting that wrong. Using pictures, maps & personal accounts Mr Ferguson tell sthe story of the 12th Armored Division in a readable manner.
