If you want a knife that can do almost anything you ask of it and still shave your arm hair afterwards, this is the one. It's small enough that you'll hardly notice it's there until you need it but it's big enough for most real-world chores. It's simple and elegant and Earthy and is a welcome departure from the ultra-modern "tactical" blades flooding the market these days. In short, it was worth every penny and I don't believe I will be needing another outdoor knife anytime in the foreseeable future. This is "the" knife.

have had this knife going on 20 years now. still impressed with it's quality and utility. the grip is very ergonomic and is comfortable even with cold/wet hands. the blade takes a razor edge with minimal effort. it only -looks- like a small knife. it will do chores you never thought possible, and it has been a great bushcraft companion. you can pay more, but you won't get a lot more.

Razor sharp; excellent grip for cold hands during winter stream fishing; light weight; cool traditional Norwegian sheath. What more could you ask for?

This is a great little knife that will excel at most tasks and be a pleasure to carry, handle and use.
The handle fills the palm and narrows to the finger choil providing opportunity for a precise and secure grip. The blade is triple laminated stainless, which means that the core is hard enough to hold a great edge while the supporting layers add durability. Fallkniven uses this blade construction. I have a Mora scout knife circa 1960 with a high carbon laminated steel blade that I have carried and used on many hunts. It has the same rat-tail tang birch handle construction. I find that I can process a mule deer, touch up the blade with a ceramic rod, oil it and be ready to go.
I especially like the sheath design on the Nying. The blade is fitted safely in the sheath and the knife held in place by a strap that hooks over the brass stud on the handle. While one can dangle this knife from the belt for around camp, I prefer to slip it into a jacket or pack pocket.
Some versions of this "fisherman's, Grandfather's or Grandmother's" knife were made with a 2 3/4" blade, but given the beauty and overall utility of the Nying, I think Helle has hit the sweet spot.
Helle knives are handmade in the same village in Norway where the company started. If you like the Nying but want a larger carbon blade, check out the "Viking", a recreation of their ancient working knife.

First of all, I'm not a knife collector nor expert, but I know a really 'good' knife from a so-so knife. For me, the Nying is great as a neck EDC knife (despite being more apt to roll than lie flat...Might be annoying to some people) Or as another reviewer says, just tuck it in a jacket pocket. Has a short leather thong instead of a belt loop. Has been a trusty companion slicing apples and carving a spoon

It came very sharp, and has a nice, good-looking, functional sheath. The handle is well-designed for a smaller knife, and the curly birch wood has a beautiful glow. Maybe more expensive than say, a Mora Scout, but it has a more traditional design and is downright beautiful. [There is a reason this knife and sheath won a 'Nordic Design' award.] I love the looks, I love the functionality.

That being said, this is a knife that requires a bit more care cleaning, oiling, and sharpening, if that is a concern for you. Also, if you want a knife that'll open wine bottles, make pancakes, or fix a truck, this isn't it. The Nying is just a nice, smaller, fixed blade knife. But that is all I wanted it for.

If you're looking for a large bushcraft or hunting knife, look at the Helle Eggen, Temagami, or similar larger models. But for a camp or daily use knife, the Nying is great. I love mine.

Anyone looking for an edc workhorse look no further the handle is robust enough to fill all hand sizes even though it's compact the blade is a good size without falling into the illegal category in most states the edge geometry is great for bushcrafting and woodworking as well as skinning and general utility generally if it makes the hair on my arm pop up and off that's more than I would expect out of a factory edge but the creation craftsmen in the helle plant show pristine quality as well as dedication to a superior product excellent work I will definitely be checking out more helle knives soon also the leather tooling is of a top notch quality as well along with the interesting packaging I wish American cutlery companies would take some notes here.

i am well pleased with the quality, fit, finish of this blade. it is beautiful to look at, wonderful to hold. i did have to put saddle soap on the sheath and oil up the handle - they were a bit dry after, i assume, sitting so long in a cardboard container. speaking of which, you can see unboxing videos for Helle knives on youtube, but they are very carefully packaged from the factory - so there is very little chance of a Helle knife being damaged in the process of getting to you.

one thing about the knife that isn't available in photos; the handle is lozenge-shaped, tapered toward the blade, it fits the hand very naturally.

I have an appreciation for pride in craftsmanship and products that are built to last...this meets that criteria. You can get a large hand on the Nying due to the large handle. Delivered prior to estimated date.

This knife is great for feather sticks. Another great knife for this purpose is its brother the Helle Symfoni. These two models are great tools for the backpacker.

Oh what a spectacular knife! Flawless in nearly every way and surpassed my expectations by kilometers! The precision and LOVE with which this knife is made is evident the second that you take it out of the TUBE that these beautiful knives come in. I would value this knife at $200-$300 easily, but for $84 on Amazon (~$90ish after taxes if applicable) I truly find it a must buy. In fact, I loved holding it so much out of the box that I just bought a second Helle Nying Knife to use and abuse and keep the other as an heirloom for my son. Truly an incredibly piece and yet so simple...wood...and steel.... No plastic any where near this blade or it's handmade sheath (also a beauty!). I will be buying more Helle Knives in the future (and in fact have the Helle GT knife in the mail on it's way to me as I write this...so excited!).

Have no reservations when buying this knife, knowing full well that you are buying an absolutely exquisite cutting tool....
