Review
"Her subjects are actors in scenes she painstakingly creates. At first glance, the images appear spontaneous, but a closer look shows fine-tuned detail and craft, from the texture of a wall to the crook of an elbow." -- Kirssa Corbett Cavouras --American Photo
"Another Citibank nominee, van Meene's objective is to create a sociological image of contemporary youth, rather than photographing the individual, and her images therefore concentrate on adolescent girls. Artfully staged and very beautiful, the nascent sexuality of the young people photographed can nevertheless make you feel very uncomfortable." --The British Journal of Photography
"Van Meene may not be interested in illuminating her subjects' emotions but her photographs are nevertheless psychologically unsettling." --ArtReview
"Though the introspective gazes of her models suggest that these are spontaneous, private moments in the lives of her subjects, the carefully considered natural light, lush colors and textures, and striking compositions betray van Meene's hand in choreographing each image down to the finest detail. Yet these picturesque qualities are undercut by a disquieting tension: the models are placed in awkward, seemingly uncomfortable poses: their clothes are ill-fitting, or inside-out; another models a fresh bruise. The intimacy of these images simultaneously exposes the uncertain age of adolescence and the complicated act of capturing this on film." --HotShoe International
"There's something askew about the girls in Hellen van Meene's pictures. Bending, leaning or lying, in cold, old-fashioned interiors and overgrown gardens, they're presented with their hair caught in tree branches; a purplish bruise on pale skin; half-smiles and distracted gazes. Captured alone in odd, seemingly intimate moments of inbetweenness, teetering between self-possession and vulnerability, you can't help but look, although the spectacle is always a little unsettling on closer inspection." -- Charlotte Cotton --Pop
