Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The author's first SF novel and the first part of a proposed trilogy, this involves Butterfly St. Cyr, an interplanetary smuggler (her contraband ranges from philosophy texts to an undefined item called "never-you-mind"p . 15 ). Butterfly's life goes askew when she finds herself entangled with Valijon Starbringer (or, as Butterfly calls him, "Tiggy Stardust"), a young member of the alMayne (colloquially called "hellflowers") royalty. Butterfly is in possession of a sentient and illegal computer called a Library, named Paladin, whose existence she must go to great lengths to keep secret. Further, she has been coerced into doing a job involving a second Library, one not nearly so genteel as Paladin. There are some interesting uses of language (foreign word derivations like "purdu" and "che-bai"),p.176, 13 and some funny bits (a chapter titled "How to File for Moral Bankruptcy"p.180 ). But the alMayne are yet another race of large, temperamental, animalistic humanoids with a bizarre code of honor. And does the SF genrepk really need another sentient computer? Still, this is a breezy read with a good mix of humor, adventure and politics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great thoughtful Science Fiction, January 6, 1999

Don't be put off by the slightly lame and generic-sounding synopsis presented for these books. The Hellflower trilogy is well worth reading. What starts off in "Hellflower" as a fairly formulaic 'fiercely independent space smuggler stumbles into dangerous political conspiracy' matures in the next two books into a very thoughtful and empathetic story about human beings, their relationships, and human loyalty. Some of the slightly cheesy devices that Shahar uses in "Hellflower" to create the ambiance are dropped as the series progresses, and the story ends up being bloody great sci-fi. If you can find all three books, read them and treasure them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original, engaging, unpredictable!, September 2, 2009

Such a pleasure to meet a book with so many dimensions.

Butterflies-are-free Peace Sincere is not your usual Rebel Without A Cause. Sure, she begins that way, but when your best friend is a Library -- a Fully Volitional Logic to be precise -- in a galaxy where computers are considered evil, life surely can't remain simple.

So why not rescue a homicidal Hellflower while you're at it?

The voice in this book swings between Butterfly's colourful and creative slang to Paladin's (the Library's) coolly sarcastic personal logs. Events may follow your standard "let's all fly a spaceship around and fire lasers" plot with a side-order of oppressive government, but there's nothing else standard about this trilogy. If you stick around for the second and third books, you'll find yourself questioning everything. I'm still not sure whose side I'm on... good guys, bad guys, who cares, I just want to read it again!

Recommended for readers who prefer 'people vs. people' to 'heroes vs. villains'.

Eluki bes Shahar has also written many great fantasy, mystery and romance (yes, romance too) novels under the name Rosemary Edghill. Check them out, you won't be sorry.
