Book Description

“Quick but highly entertaining read… reminded me of Jim Butcher’s urban fantasy series The Dresden Files.” — Ian Chung, Sabotage Reviews

"Hellboy meets Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, meets Jim Butcher and Larry Correia in this insane pulp-action adventure novella featuring a haunted suicidal anti-hero who joins a rock band and fights evil." — Paul Genesse, author of the Iron Dragon Series

Heaven doesn't want them. Do they stand a chance in Hell?

Bass player Mike Archuleta is down on his luck in a major way. The shattered survivor of a misspent youth, he is haunted by the ghost of his dead brother, and is now driven to planning his suicide. Halfway through the show that's supposed to be his last, a hellhound bursts into the club and attacks the band. The band members pull out karate moves, guns, and even a sword... and then things start to get strange.

Can Mike survive the show? What can he do about his brother's ghost? And what kind of band is this, anyway?

Hellhound on My Trail is the first installment of Rock Band Fights Evil, a pulp fiction serial by D.J. Butler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hellboy meets Scott Pilgrim vs. The World April 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Hellboy meets Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, meets Jim Butcher and Larry Correia in this insane pulp-action adventure novella featuring a haunted suicidal anti-hero who joins a rock band and fights evil. The action is intense, crazy, and things go KABOOM quite often. Hellhound on My Trail, Rock Band Fights Evil #1 by D.J. Butler is a rollicking adventure that goes where you don't expect. It straddles the line between gritty and funny. I never imagined a dive bar rock band would actually be a team of ass-kicking warriors for good. Poor Mike thought he was just going to play his bass guitar with some crappy band and make a buck so he could buy a lot of alcohol before he killed himself, but nooooo, a freaking hellhound shows up and it's on bitches!

Editor of The Crimson Pact anthology series

5.0 out of 5 stars On the Trail of Evil March 28, 2012

There are books that change your life. That make you stand up and cheer. That are "Truth" in their purest sense.

This is not one of them.

BUT there are also books that serve to give you an escape; to take you from humdrum to fun-fun. Books whose main selling point are that they allow you to have an adventure, enjoy yourself, and come with fun characters and stuff that "blows up real good." Books that, if they were made into movies, would be perfect excuses for selling popcorn.

This IS one of those.

And there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, sometimes it hits exactly the right spot, in much the same way that even though breakfast is supposed to be the healthiest meal of the day, sometimes things just won't be right until you get a donut or an over-sugared cinnamon roll. Sometimes books are comfort food for the mind. HELLHOUND ON MY TRAIL is the first in a promising series of adventures that call to mind Saturday-morning serials and Robert Aspirin's MYTH ADVENTURES series. Fun, light, even whimsical. It is a book that revels in the semi-permanent confusion of its main character as he finds out that the band he is working with is anything BUT just a band.

I don't want to reveal too much of the plot (I hate it when reviewers do that), but I did want to encourage those who are looking for an escape, some strange creatures from beyond, and maybe even a laugh or two in between the suspense and thrills to check this one out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this one March 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
When DJ Butler sent me the description of Hellhound on my Trail, the first in a pulpy Rock Fiction series, I sent him back an e-mail with three words: SEND REVIEW COPY.
Start to finish, this was a great read. Suicidal Mike stands in with a band he's never heard of before. They need a bass player. He's putting off the inevitable. It's a good fit.
Except... in the middle of the set, a Hellhound rushes in, setting off a chase that lasts the length of the book. Mike's suddenly fighting for his life even as he's haunted by his dead brother. At times, he wonders if he would have been better off if he'd kept to his plan and offed himself, but this ragtag band he's fallen in with most certainly needs him in order to stay alive, themselves.
What else is there to say? The story's tight, the writing's snappy, the creepy stuff is delicious, and there's a ton of cleverness going on in here, as well. There are dead rabbis, tasers, archangels, weird metal-like fly-things, and a piece of Satan's hoof. This short book, just over 100 pages, is closer to a novella - and it's the perfect length. Any longer and it would run the risk of getting tedious. Any shorter, and it wouldn't be nearly so complete.
No matter what comes next, it's got quite a predecessor to live up to.

More About the Author

D.J. Butler wrote a lot of rock songs before he ever completed a decent novel. The only one he ever got paid for was "WalMart Loves You, Anyway," which he sent on CD to the entire WalMart board of directors, and for which he was sent a $25 WalMart Gift Card. He spent the loot with gusto.

Butler writes speculative fiction of all sorts for all ages. For right now, you can read his Rock Band Fights Evil and City of the Saints series, but more is coming soon.
