Hell of a novel,
By Logan M. Williams (Roxbury, Boston MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hellified (Paperback)
Hellified was a trip through first semester at Georgetown U. The events and characters are well defined to give the reader an "almost there" type of feel. Another unique point is that the reader can get caught up in the lives of more than just the main character of the story. There is humor suspense and plenty of drama. It also reads fluently, credit to the skillful technique of the author. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it highly to those who enjoy to read the black youth experience( that's not all gangs, drugs pimps and ho's) Check it out!

Joy ride from NY to DC!,

Yes, Black kids attend Georgetown University who are not on the basketball team. Hellified is a comedic yet socio-political look through the eyes of a group of young guys and gals coming of age in the conservative land of Washington, D.C. circa 1988. It just does n't get more real than this. Life lessons are often bitter. Not repeating mistakes is an even greater challenge. Thumbs up to Tracy Grant for reminding us that the pot of gold we are always looking for at the end of the rainbow sometimes comes in different forms. An important read for people of all ages, races and genders.

A nostalgic fish out of water story,

Grant's voice is full of wit, insight and obvious love of a good music. The words to Lauren Hill's "Take Me Back" came to mind while reading Hellified. This will be a stocking stuffer for all of my college friends. It's refreshing to read another perspective on college life from the eyes of young black men attending predominately white university.

A fun page turner reminiscent of my college years in DC,

Although admittedly, I was a bit thrown by the title "Hellified" (I've always been a square peg with slang...hellified being good not bad) I was delighted by Grant's ability to recreate the 80's college scene in Washington,D.C. Characters develop in a teasingly real way. As a result, I was often forced to laugh at my own coming of age. This book takes you on a journey where you won't want to return. Thank you Mr. Grant for the memories!

A Skillfully Written, Fun College Tale!,

This review is from: Hellified (Paperback)
Tracy Grant's HELLIFIED is a fabulous coming of age piece. There's enough going on with DJ Troy, Ill Will, the Black Student Union and their freshman adventures to keep you captivated. The two semester story and fast pace make this a great read. The DC backdrop with students partying and hitting the books, along with the frat brother scenes, are wonderful. Tracy Grant gives us a look at young black men who are far from stereotypical. Put this author up there with "The Best Man" and "The Brothers," this would make a great movie. I can't wait for the next book.

This is an EXCELLENT read from begining to end. I dare you to read it and not think about that first time your heart was broken in college or wondering if he or she could be the one for you.Read it and enjoy the HELLIFIED ride.

Good Reading for upcoming college freshmen,
By
This review is from: Hellified (Paperback)
While not my cup of tea, I did find Hellified interesting enough to want to recommend to some high school seniors who are planning to go away to college. I think the book gives a pretty good overview of some things that happens around college campuses, and of things that freshman exprience during their first experiences away from home and parental authority.Troy is a freshman at Georgetown. He finds out that all party and little studying is not good for the GPA. He is busy trying to "get with the girls in the dorm", become involved in extra cirrcular activities, and hanging out that he almost forgets why he is at Georgetown. Troy has a lot of growing up to do. This book hits on college drinking, sexual activities, clubs and organizations and coming of age, among other things. This book if taken seriously by the reader could become a handbook for the college freshman.

A fun and exciting flashback into college life!,
By JDaniels (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Hellified (Paperback)
This was an excellent read. Tracy Grant was able to bring the feel of campus to life not only for those who have also lived it, but also for those who have not, which is every writer's dream, to make their characters *breathe*.The political overtones of Hellified was also very interesting, although it is understandable that this novel's setting takes place almost fifteen years ago when black political arena was much different, it still leaves an impact on how even today young people are taking up the reins on campus to be culturally aware and a strong political force. Hellified touches on some sensitive sexual, and young relationship elements and also on some of the problems young people faced then and now with drug and alcohol abuse. The ingenious way Grant tackled all these issues yet keep the novel interesting and fast paced shows him to be an author to keep an eye on in the future. Big ups for Hellified, and 4 stars!!

Don't make the mistake...,

...Of reading this book. This "novel" (and I use the term loosely) was straight wack. If I could give it negative stars I would. The characters lacked depth, the dialogue was trite and the plot was non-existent. I am so mad at myself that I wasted countless hours of my life reading this trash. Having gone to Georgetown, I'm appalled that the Black community there has been represented in this way as a bunch of sex-crazed-drug-trafficking-dirty-deed-doing-just-plain-old-trifling individuals. Is it too late to get a refund?!
