4.0 out of 5 stars Good but wanted more...
I bought this double pack because it was cheaper than buying either one title locally in Australia. Having watched both DVDs twice and utilising what I have learnt I have definitely improved in my playing - in fact using Chris Moneymaker's World Championship Poker computer simulation I have won just about every tournament!
It is good to buy the double pack because...

2.0 out of 5 stars Phil Helmeuth's Million $ Waste Of Time.
Phil Helmeuth is an amazing player, and one of the worlds best. The idea you should learn from the best lead me seriously a-stray with this lack-lustre dvd.

Phils typical arogant, whitty, poker-brat self has been left behind, and the "dvd" phil is an awkward, goofy science teacher like guy which makes listening to him difficult.

2.0 out of 5 stars Phil Helmeuth's Million $ Waste Of Time., November 13, 2005
This review is from: Phil Hellmuth's Texas Hold 'Em 2-DVD Set (Masters of Poker) (DVD)

As far as content goes, the top 10 hands, majority play hands, and tough calls sections are obvious to any player who didn't start playing last week.

Phil does make a good point about reading the players at your table and he categorises them into "animal types," and how to play against the different types of players. The idea is nothing new, but the information is presented in a user-friendly fassion.

The bluffing and tells section is so so. It gives some obvious and some not so obvious examples in "Phil's top 10 Tells" and a few good tips on bluffing.

All and all this dvd falls short, solely on it's inability to delve more than skin deep on what truely is, an extremely complex game. In the dvd, Phil says "Texas Hold'em is a game that takes only minutes to learn, and a life time to master." After viewing this dvd, I feel I am sadly not any closer to mastery than when I pressed play.

This is a veggie DVD. No meat. Howard Lederer's DVD series is alot better and you actually get some useful material. Do not waste your money. The production is really amatuer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very, Very bad, January 31, 2009
This review is from: Phil Hellmuth's Texas Hold 'Em 2-DVD Set (Masters of Poker) (DVD)
I bought the Phil Hellmuth Super Course with all 4 of his videos. I thought the videos were very disappointing and misleading. There were two major problems:

1. The top ten hands are very misleading and only the smallest limit games can be beat by using that strategy.

2. The tournament Strategies DVD spent most of the time discussing how to enter the WSOP main event instead of teaching how to play the game.

I thought the DVD's were very misleading because they gave a strategy that will only work in the smallest limit games and then gives the impression that by following his top ten hand system you will be able to enter the World Series. And to go a step farther, Phil did a poor job of showing how to use these ten hands. He makes little attempt to show the difference between pocket sevens and pocket queens. He also failed to show how position can affect the hands preflop. If you were under the gun in No-limit, then only half of the top ten hands could be played, and if you were on the button, then all of the ten plus Ace-X suited and connectors should also be played because they rate to win. Phil should have mentioned this in his DVD's.

The bottom line is this...Beginners who buy these DVD's will be WORSE OFF than they would be if they just never purchased them.
Thats a big problem.

I suggest SuperSystem by Doyle Brunson or any book by Dan Harrington

It is good to buy the double pack because he refers to certain chapters/themes in their respective companion dvds.
However I was disappointed to find out ALL the extras on one DVD are duplicated on the other.
Really there is probably enough room for probably all 4 DVDs in the series on 1 DVD - but he is obviously maximising his profit.
Having said that, for a novice/amateur who wants to improve their game or become a professional this is a great start.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like Phil!, August 14, 2009

Pretty decent dvds. Was looking for the dvd but I seem to have lost it. Great for a beginner and held my interest more than the awful van patten dvds that I purchased. Phils personality really comes out in these.
