Editorial Reviews

2012 album from the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter. The title, Hello Cruel World, is a pun on the famed exit line - a joke that, like the lovely melodies and deliciously textured arrangements framing these 11 songs - sweetens this captivating music spun from a year of turmoil. Peters calls Hello Cruel World her "most close-to-the-bone work, written at a time when I felt absolutely fearless about telling the truth." Peters and her guest Rodney Crowell sing, "life is still a beautiful disaster," on "Dark Angel." But Peters keeps the accent on the "beautiful" throughout her ninth disc, with both her poetic language and the spare, evocative sounds she created in the studio to support her organic story-telling.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazingly high standard February 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Gretchen Peters has had a lot to live up to, since one of her earliest songs was 'Independence Day', an enormously emotional and empowering song about a difficult subject. Since than she has constantly produced albums of full of outstanding songs and fabulous production values. But here she has surpassed herself - virtually every song is a classic, the instrumentation is exceptional, her voice is as good as ever. I really did not expect her to make a better album than 'One the Heart One to the Head' (with Tom Russell) but she has built on the 'sound' of that album and the songwriting is exceptional. Difficult to pick out a best song, but the ones that move me most are the title track, 'Idlewild' and '5 Minutes'. Oh, ands there is the Tom Russell co-write 'Saint Francis', and the duet with Rodney Crowell, 'Dark Angel'. I could go on a describe each of these and all the rest, too, but take my word for it, this is an astounding album, easily the best of the year so far, and destined to be on the critics 'best of' list without a doubt. An essential addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful February 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I saw gretchen perform in New York City last month and she was nothing short of mesmerizing. I bought this CD and have been addicted to it ever since. Highly recommended - it never gets boring. The music is somehow both very exciting and soothing at the same time. Can't wait to hear more of her music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stones Unturned February 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The title track of Gretchen Peters' new CD is gorgeously addictive. It has a delightful midtempo beat, a great melody with the viola and cello giving a depth to the music, "I'm a ticking clock, a losing bet; I'm a girl without a safety net; I'm a cause for some concern; You don't live this long without regrets, telephone calls you don't wanna get, stones you'd rather leave unturned." It's stunning. "The Matador" has a classic Peters melody and her strong lyric laced over a languid beat with Barry Walsh's accordion giving the track a distinctive flavor, "I love like only a woman can, a very complicated man; I bound his wounds; I heard his cries; I gave him truth; I told him lies." Rodney Crowell joins on vocals on the lovely "Dark Angel." "Paradise Found" uses a Garden of Eden metaphor with Peters' vocals seductively tempting. Gretchen's ability as a vocalist shines on the lovely elegy, "Idlewild." While I usually prefer a majority of uptempo tracks such as the opener "Hello Cruel World," this set offers solid songwriting, great vocals and strong arrangements throughout. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars One Good Song after Another February 21, 2012
By swimjay
Format:Audio CD
Gretchen Peters seems poised to become an overnight sensation (after many years of work). I don't think there's a weak song on this album. Her writing is great (from a previous album, "I'm gonna buy me a Winnebago, and a map of Mexico," a great formulation of "Let's get lost"), and her singing both emotionally involving and intelligent. She's also great live, if you ever get a chance to hear her. The current album has a typically well-produced, lush and complex assortment of background musicians, who don't get in the way, but when I heard her live, she was just accompanied by her pianist husband (who also plays accordion), which was more than enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great lyricist! May 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Gretchen Peters, like most of us, has faced some tough battles in her life. But lately her trials have been overwhelming. She's tired and angry, but far from ready to give up. In fact, her difficult experiences have made her appreciate life's good times and taught her to live in the moment. In a less gifted artist's hands, this theme could become maudlin. But Peters paints such intriguing, intelligent and likable characters, this CD is nothing less than artful and moving. "Hello Cruel World" is a top candidate for my favorite album of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational album April 2, 2012
By Lottin
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is an album of heartfelt stories that are somewhat bleak, but with a touch of hope. Gretchen Peters is an artist with a fabulous voice and is backed here by fine musicians. In places she reminds me a little of Mary Gauthier and in other spots Bobbie Gentry comes to mind. But every song exudes her own style and talent and appear to come from a very personal place of lessons in life. A slight country flavour is evident, but anybody who appreciates a laid back style with honesty and emotions shining through, great musical arrangements and above all meaningful heartfelt lyrics will love this album. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gretchen Peters needs to be heard by more people... June 19, 2012
By Kendran
Format:MP3 Music
Gretchen Peters sets the bar higher for herself and other artists with this wonderful album. Each song offers its own perspective on our journey through life and some of the difficult challenges faced by all of us. This album is "as real as it gets". Her voice is deep, warm and soulful and the musicians backing her up strengthen the passion within every song. It's hard to even pick a favorite - each song is amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece June 3, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
In a career brimming with stellar songs from a unique perspective, Gretchen Peters` Hello Cruel World is unquestionably her finest hour.

It is dark and sad, brave and beautiful. There is loneliness and regret, and there is the redemption and refuge found in true companionship. It is true. It is life.

Make no mistake, this is a collection of songs that leans toward the darkness. That makes the cracks of light throughout all the more enlightening. Besides, as Mary Chapin Carpenter once said, "you can't know the light without the darkness."

Tastefully understated production and arrangement serve the songs perfectly, and the musicianship is simply outstanding.

This album will get inside you, and I suspect that it will not leave you anytime soon. It is a brilliant and intimate reflection on life and living in what is indeed a cruel world.

Somehow, the world seems a bit less harsh with this music in it.
