The publisher should reissue this!,

This review is from: Hello Darling, Are You Working? (Paperback)
I got lucky and found this book in a local bookstore. I bought it mainly because I was intrigued to discover it was Rupert Everett who wrote this book, and I wanted to see what an actor could do in the world of writing. It's not Christian McLaughlin or Doug Guinan, but "Hellow Darling" is enjoyable, and it provides a snappy insight into a world in which rich people aren't quite as secure as the rest of us think they are.

The copy I have was loaned to me by a friend and I refuse to give it back! I've re-read it at least eleven times. It's the kind of book you'd want to keep around for when you're feeling just icky for no reason. Give yourself a couple of hours to read it and you'll feel better (it's pleasant enough as it is)...or worse (you'll hurt from laughing too much - when you realize how likely the events of the story can really happen - in a less grander scale, of course).Well worth the read - witty, charming, and most of all, absolutely hilarious!

Fluffy but amusing,
This review is from: Hello Darling, Are You Working? (Paperback)
This is an extremely light read from Rupert Everett. I've always loved his acting - he does a marvelous job playing droll English aristocrats. This is more of the same, and even though it doesn't live up to the caliber of his acting, Everett's fans will enjoy it. Parts of this novel are clearly autobiographical (not all, one hopes), and those are the parts that are the most successful. Especially adept was his portrayal of the vain neurosis of a semi-young, handsome actor. All in all, I prefer Stephen Fry's take on the modern English comedy of errors novel, but that only seems fair since I prefer Everett's acting.

A very fun read!,
This review is from: Hello Darling, Are You Working? (Paperback)
I've had this book for 4 years and have read and re-read it over again. The dialogue is wonderfully funny and the story moves along at a quick pace. Ideal characters and you can really sense that this book *is* semi-autobiographical. I wish Amazon would carry his other books!

Brilliant Satire!,

This review is from: Hello Darling, Are You Working? (Paperback)
It has to be doesn't it? Contrary to the book jacket this can't be a thinly veiled life of Rupert Evertt, but instead a ruthless commentary on the "jet set."I found the book in the library and had to read it. Everett is an amazing actor so I thought I'd give his fiction a try. Absolutely phenominal! I was reminded of Evelyn Waugh or Oscar Wilde throughout the book. The only disappointment was the ending...I want more of Rhys, Adrienne, and especially Peach! What a super scream!

Fun and Fluffy,
This review is from: Hello Darling, Are You Working? (Paperback)
Who knew that Rupert Everett could write? Don't get me wrong, this is not literary fiction, but it isn't meant to be! This is a fun, fluffy romp through the life of a bisexual, drug-using, prostitute, and his wacky mother, insane father, and cross-dressing drug using friends! Did I mention the drug use? At times disturbing, yet hilarious, drugs are actually the main character of the novel! From the first page, I was hooked! It gets a little slow in sections but I kept on reading because I knew that in a page or two it'd have me rolling with laughter again! It did everytime!Do not read this book if you feel like thinking, or are in a serious mood, it's fluff, to be read in a day at the most. But, it made me fell better! The only thing is the stupid ending has got to go! Do yourself a favor and skip the last chapter, it is rather touching but puhleeze! Anyway, read the book if you want to have a day full of laughter, and devoid of serious thought.

The man's gorgeous, a talented actor, and he can write too?!,

I didn't expect much, honestly; I decided to read it because I think Rupert Everett's just the sexiest thing. But hey, the man has a brain and he can write too. I shall never objectify a gorgeous actor again! The novel is amusing and witty, and has a surprisingly existential ending.

My Favourite Book ever!!,

This is my absolutely favourite book ever and I've read it a million times and plan to read it again. It's hugely entertaining and hilarious and it's so true to life (although my life is, thank God, never that chaotic all at once!). It's a must-read for anyone with a good sense of humour and the absurd!

Hilarious...,

I read this book as a lark, and that's exactly what I got. At times hysterical, histrionic, and bittersweet, Everett's book romps along in a world of sex, drugs, and extraordinarily dubious morals. Although it does at times drag, you know it will only be a page before another side-splitting line will make you laugh at loud. Highly entertaining, Lady Beth.

....for me,a small handful will do, especially if the style is so breathless a sophomoric attempt at being outrageous and funny.
The book is a series of vignettes, more or less linked, often fantastic, and at times, I admit, funny. Before i read this book I had read the later RED CARPETS & OTHER BANANA SKINS, which I rather enjoyed. Everett seems to have gone from sophomore to junior here, and so I found the writing much more enjoyable. It too had lots of drinking, drugs, and gay abandon, but I liked Evertett's handling of the material much better. I must admit I am no fan of his acting. Mostly I find it inept, though in MY BEST FRIEND"S WEDDING I thought it was passable. |
